The 2024 Democratic Primary for Delaware's Governorship, a contest between Lieutennant Governor Bethany Hall-Long, New Castle County Executive Matt Meyer, and frm. State Environmental Protection Chief Collin O'Mara resulted in a comanding Victory for Executive Meyer.
Here, Meyer won in spite of the state's establishment, most of whom such as Governor John Carney, Speaker Valerie Longhurst—along with a littany of Labor Unions—supported Hall Long.
The reason for the win in spite of this, along with accusations that he tolerated sexual harassment from the Hall-Long Camp as executive, is because of a serious yearlong damning campaign financing scandal that dogged Hall-Long and Her Husband Dana Long
Said scandal came in parts, the first part was that after she paused campaign spending, canceling multiple high profile events, Hall-Long claimed she had been sloppy in recording Some $300K in loans to her campaign, some $207K of which had been repaid to Hall-Long's husband
Later, in Late July, the Department of Elections released the results of an audit that poured Gasoline on the fire of this scandal, in it, the audit found that nearly $300K in undisclosed payments had been payed (mostly) to her husband of which $33K couldn't be substanciated with loans to the campaign.
And on top of the fact that these loans were not documented, Most of the money had been allocated by the Longs for campaign expenses using multiple credit cards which offered rewards such as free hotels or flight discounts.
As a result of this scandal, not only did long have to deal with the Fallout, but she had to contend with the financial handicap that this put there in, resulting in Matt Meyer not just outspending her, but beating her in the Primary by a convincing 10.4%.
