As Mary Peltola is to be sworn in, and we say our final goodbyes to Don Young and honor His Legacy, I want to take a moment To recognize his work on the United States-Puerto Rico Political Status Act of 1997, Vote Pictured bellow, and his broad commitment to Puerto Rican Statehood more Broadly.
It is said that Young, Remembering the days Alaska was a territory, wanted to make sure that Puerto Rico got a choice as to it's political future, with him Favoring Statehood alongside the PNP, with the stated but not full support of, President Bill Clinton.
To this effect he worked with former Governor, and Incumbent Resident Commissioner at the time Carlos Romero Barceló (PNP-D) in an attempt to get a binding status plebiscite passed by congress, the "Proyecto Young" as it is known in Puerto Rico.
Both of them working together were able to get a coalition of a Majority of Democrats and a Strong Minority of Republicans to get the Bill to pass in the house by one vote, The last time a Bill that would have changed the status of PR Passed either chamber.
Now there were some problems with the Bill, such as the Failled Poison Pill by (R) Gerald Solomon (NY-22) that would have declared English the Official Language in the U.S. Substituted later with one that simply encouraged english Proficiency in Puerto Rico.
However, the Bill Passed the house, and despite it not advancing in the Senate, For the rest of his carreer Don Young continued Working with the PNP resident Commissioners in order to achieve equality for Puerto Rico. A goal he - Sadly - will not get too see Fulfilled.
Rest in Peace Representative Young, You will be missed.
