Per recent reports, it appears that Julia Menin has attained the support needed to become Speaker of the NYC Council, with 35 Council People publicly supporting her — granting her 36 votes (including herself) to become Speaker of the Council.
This comes as a blow to progressive forces on the council, & Zohran Mamdani's incoming administration as Menin has positioned herself as a "check" on the Mamdani administration — a position that allowed her to lock up the support of the GOP conference.
Per Coltin, this is the earliest a presumptive speaker has been able to declare victory, with Mid-December to Early January being a more typical date to find out whom the speaker is since the position was instituted in 1990.
