By providing users access to clean supplies (Lowering the risk of HIV transmissions with needles) while also making "Safe Consumption sites" available as an outlet that has; Free Mental and Physical health services, Housing supports and addiction counseling.

Harm reduction supports the idea that those with addiction or substance use issues should be treated with dignity and respect and have a wide selection of treatment options in order to make an informed decision about their individual needs and what would be the most effective for them, while also reducing the harms. (Marlatt, A. (2011). Integrating Harm Reduction Therapy and Traditional Addiction And Traditional Substance Use Treatment. Journal of Psychoactive Drugs. 331:1 )

"I don't need naloxone, I don't do drugs!"

The McMaster and Hamilton community should consider carrying a naloxone kit because opioid overdoses are a pressing issue in Canada, with approximately 12 deaths per day attributed to accidental opioid use.

In Hamilton alone, there were 560 suspected overdose incidents from January to September 2024. Carrying naloxone can be a lifesaver; it’s a simple, effective way to reverse an overdose and can be administered by anyone.

By having a naloxone kit, we not only protect ourselves but also help create a safer community.

The opioid crisis affects us all, contributing to significant health care costs and community challenges. Being equipped with naloxone reflects a commitment to health and safety, fostering an environment where everyone can thrive.
