The Certification Assistance Program is a free program designed to support and encourage manufacturers to obtain any of the following:
Certification of product(s) to Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Safer Choice label
Addition of ingredients on EPA's Safer Chemical Ingredient List (SCIL)
Certification of ingredients (and tradename) to be added to Cleangredients (a database used by Safer Choice product formulators to find pre-certified ingredients for their formulations).
The assistance offered includes direct assistance in the certification process, from the Pollution Prevention Resource Center, and and reimbursement for pursuing the EPA Safer Choice or Cleangredients certification.
Eligible recipients include:
Oregon-based ingredient or product manufacturer
Product or ingredient manufacturers selling ingredients or products in Oregon (including e-commerce)
Eligible Businesses Receive
Up to $6,000 reimbursement toward Safer Choice certification fees, or or Cleangredients subscription and application fees
Up to 100 hours of direct technical assistance in compiling required information and navigating the Safer Choice Community application system for products and/or Cleangredients ingredients
Support from a team of government and nonprofit green chemistry certification advisors
Free Certification Assistance
A dedicated Sustainability Associate will work with businesses to:
Compile product ingredients and composition for review.
Coordinate with third-party chemical reviewers and EPA.
Identify opportunities for safer chemical alternatives.
Prepare Safer Choice application materials for submittal.
Program Goals
Assist businesses that have limited resources with navigating the Safer Choice certification process.
Substitute toxic chemicals for a safer alternatives.
Increase Safer Choice-certified product(s) on the market.
The Sustainability Associate is supported by an advisory team with staff from Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Washington Department of Ecology (Ecology), and the Pollution Prevention Resource Center (PPRC).
The Certification Assistance Program is coordinated by the Pollution Prevention Resource Center (PPRC) and the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). This program is funded in part by the Environmental Protection Agency's Healthy, Resilient, Sustainable Communities Grant.
