Within a young-looking boy's heart, his soul lays flat on a wet, solid surface. His body twitches which cause him to wake up. He attempts to stand, but falls to one knee.
"Why do I feel so weak?", He thinks to himself.
He tries to slowly stand up again and manages to get on his feet.
"What's going on?", He asks himself. "I can't remember anything".
While he regains his strength, the boy looks around. He sees nothing as far as the eye can see. He's standing on a dark pillar with water falling downwards. He wearily walks to look over the edge, but he sees nothing below him. Suddenly, an intimidating voice speaks to him, trying to reach him.
"Dusk..."
It spooks the boy. But it causes him to remember his name.
"Who is that?" Dusk shouts.
"My identity is not important right now", the voice says. "Your curse is lifting. You will wake up again".
"What? What do you mean?!" Dusk asks, freaked out.
"It will all make sense soon. However, my role here has been fulfilled", the voice responds.
The voice manifests itself into a dark, shadowed figure. It appears behind Dusk.
"Just know this...", it eerily talks.
Dusk jolts to look behind him. He turns around and faces the figure.
"Those who are black-hearted like you will come to your rescue. Your future is your own, but you will never be able to escape the darkness." The figure continues.
Dread and confusion courses through Dusk. Despite such, he looks daggers at the shadowy figure as it disappears. Feeling instinctively threatened by its menacing tone.
Within a stray corridor in the deepest part of an abandoned temple is a statue of Dusk in the middle of an altar. Standing still, cold, and almost blending in with the room itself. Bit by bit, the smoothstone texture flakes off. Dusk was coming to life. He felt his body move for the first time; it almost scared him. He placed his hand on his chest and looks around him.
He looks around, wondering where he is. An empty altar with nothing but a small platform, a stone bridge attached to it, and Dusk standing in the middle. He looks down and notices two completely rusted pistols. He picked them up; they seemed familiar to him, but he didn't know why. He struggles to pull the trigger on one of the pistols. But when he does, nothing happens. He didn't feel like he could leave them behind. So, he slid them into the inner pockets of his jacket. He then walks forward and across the bridge to leave the altar. But there is a wall at the end of the bridge.
He places his hand on the wall. Then tries to knock on it.
"Route to Prince Dusk has been secure-" one voice says.
"Shh", another voice says that cuts the first voice off. "I hear something knocking".
Dusk hears the strange voices. "Who are they?" he thinks to himself.
"Who else could that be?", the first voice says.
Who are these random people? What Prince? All these questions ate at Dusk's focus. But he notices the wall losing its sturdiness. Dusk tilts his head slightly in curiosity and thinks of a way to break it. Dusk curls his hand into a fist and punch the wall. A shout can be heard from one of the two voices.
"Don't tell me the prince is trying to break out", The voice says.
"We can't let him escape. Prince Crystal needs to get here soon", The other voice says.
Dusk notices the wall weaken even more despite his knuckles hurting from the impact. Regardless, he curls his hand into a fist and punches the wall again. His knuckles start to bleed but the wall starts falling apart a little bit. He thinks one more punch can do it. So, readies his fist again. Then he punches the wall hard. Which causes the wall to completely crumble. As the dust clears, two soldiers with bat wings and masks that conceal their entire face stand there with their shotguns aimed at Dusk.
"That is Prince Dusk!", one soldier says while lowering their weapon. "Oh, my goodness! It-"
"You're coming with us, Prince", the other soldier shouted keeping his weapon focused on him.
They use their shotgun to signal for Dusk to walk forward. He feels threatened but regardless, he steps up on the debris and slowly walks out of the altar and ahead of the soldiers.
"Hands up!" The soldier says.
Dusk did what the soldier said.
"Prince Crystal, we've secured Prince Dusk. We'll wait by the altar for you, sir", they said while holding two fingers up to the edge of their mask.
One soldier stood in front of Dusk and the other stood behind him. They stood in a line as they waited for Prince Crystal to arrive. Dusk still had his hands raised. He didn't feel safe with these two soldiers but decided to ask them, "Am I a prince?"
"The King's son doesn't know his own family? You're joking." the soldier asked Dusk, dumbfounded.
"Curtis, check for weapons", the other soldier said. "Prince's orders".
Dusk quickly realized that he was in trouble, now. He could either let the soldier revoke the two pistols in his pockets, or he could fight back. It would cause a conflict. However, the things he holds any sort of familiar feeling with could be confiscated. Curtis, the soldier, started patting Dusk down from behind. But before he got too close, Dusk punched the soldier in front of him. Which surprised Curtis, who quickly tried to grab their shotgun. But Dusk elbowed him in his stomach.
"This is Endpoint. Requesting backup now! Target has escaped. Alert Prince Crystal", the other soldier exclaims while placing two fingers on the side of his mask.
He quickly grabs his shotgun in his hands. He aims at Dusk's shin and tries to shoot, but he quickly evades, and the soldier accidentally shoots Curtis in the foot. Which doesn't hurt as the bullets barely pierce his armor. But still surprises him.
"Woah! Watch it!", Curtis yells.
Dusk grabs one of his pistols, goes behind the soldier in front of him, and uses the blunt end and slams it against the soldier's head to knock him out. He then aims his pistol at Curtis.
"Sir Dusk, why would you do that?" Curtis nervously asks Dusk.
"Drop it", Dusk tells Curtis while being holding him at gunpoint. "Prince's orders".
Curtis drops his shotgun.
"On your knees. Hands up", Dusk orders.
Curtis follows.
"Tell me how to get out of here", Dusk says, still pointing his pistol at Curtis.
"We're here to pick you up and take you back home. What would be the point?", Curtis answers anxiously.
"I have no reason to trust you or your friends. I won't be going with you". Dusk sternly says.
"You don't remember your family? The army? The kingdom? Nothing?", Curtis gently asks. "If you let us take you home, we can probably help you remember".
Dusk, who was staring daggers at Curtis, has a more calm expression. Curtis' genuine-seeming attitude convinces Dusk to not act to harsh. He slowly lowers his pistol. But quickly remembers what the other soldier tried to do to him. He continues to point his pistol at Curtis and goes back to angrily staring at him.
"Tell me how to get out of here and I'll let you go", Dusk says.
"Oh, I get it now", Curtis says juxtaposing his genuine nature . "I've heard of someone who you were close with. Akari Beacon. You want to find your friend, right? It's such a shame he won't come to save you".
Akari Beacon. That name rung a loud bell to Dusk. Within his foggy memory, he recalls Akari. That was his closest friend. His heart felt warm from hearing that name - A sign of comfort. He struggles to remember the army, his family, or some kingdom. Yet, he remembered his friend instantly. He knows what he has to do. He has to find Akari. Where could he be? He can't recall much other than the happiness of blurry memories. His face looks even angrier and focused.
"Last time. How do I get out", Dusk sternly says.
Curtis stays silent. The silence fills the room for a bit. However out of frustration, Dusk kicks Curtis in his face. Which knocks him on his back and Dusk gets on top of him and chokes him until he can't breathe. Eventually, Curtis fails to draw breaths. Dusk stands up, puts his hood over his head, puts his pistol away, puts his hands in both of his jacket pockets, and leaves the two fallen soldiers. He runs away, trying to find the way out on his own.
The backup that was called run into Dusk. They all notice and shout at Dusk to freeze. It now occurs to him that he's going to need to fight his way out of this place. He unsheathes his pistols, preparing to fight.
"We need him alive, subdue him. Do not kill", A soldier says.
They aim their guns at Dusk, and he grows scared. He quickly fires both pistols but they both click. They don't have any ammo in them. Dusk quickly sheathes his empty pistols. The soldiers slowly approach Dusk with their guns still pointed at him. In a flash, he runs up to one of the soldiers to knock them in the face with his knee. The moment he acts, gunshots are fired trying to get Dusk, but they all fail to reach him. The injured soldier falls back, and Dusk instantly makes a run for it, turning and dashing through the hallway to his left. The remaining soldiers all try to run after him, trying to shoot at Dusk. But he moves sporadically to throw them off and avoid getting hit. He turns right to continue in the hallway's path and protect himself from the soldiers. The soldiers chase after him. After he creates a distance between him and those soldiers. He takes a quick breather, places his hand on the center of his chest, then continues to run while mentally preparing to fight any other soldiers that stand in his way.
"I'm going to get out of here", Dusk quietly and aggressively repeats to himself.
He brute forces his way out of the hallway and darts toward a unique central trial room. It seems to be quiet. However three soldiers barge into the room and block the way. They notice Dusk and prepare to fight.
"Target located in the Trial Room, Captain", a soldier says.
"I'm on my way, capture him NOW!", the captain says.
Dusk overhears and immediately goes to attack the soldier. He darts toward him and punches them in the gut. He then roundhouse kicks another soldier in their face. The other soldier tries to shoot Dusk with an assault rifle.
"Dammit! Don't kill him, are you nuts?!" The gut-punched soldier weakly speaks.
The armed soldier aims at Dusk's legs and tries to prevent him from being able to move. But in a flash, Dusk evades out of the way of the fired shots. He runs around as the soldier tries to shoot him. They are then suddenly pummeled by Dusk in a flurry of fists jabbing at them and a kick to their face. The three soldiers are knocked out pretty easily by Dusk. But he isn't doing so good himself. He feels exhaustion throughout his body. He looks at his hands which ache at the armor they were attempting to pierce through. Without words, he exits the room before the other soldiers arrive.
On the other side, Dusk is met with a large space full of twists, turns, and gravity-defying obstacles. There would be no way to easily navigate this. So Dusk attempts to fly through. He wiggles his wings, but realizes he only has one bat wing. Everyone else he's encountered had two bat wings. It would be difficult to fly, but he tries to nonetheless. He leaps from the platform and flaps his wing, but he fails to truly fly and he ends up falling. He lands on a floating platform that saved him from falling into the deep abyss below. More platforms fly over to Dusk but they instead form a box to trap him, to his surprise. A voice can then be heard in the distance, despite the enclosure.
"I have you within my grasp now. You can't escape the darkness, brother", the voice says.
Dusk doesn't recognize them. But he hasn't recognized anything around him so it wasn't new. He tries to break the platform with his fist but it's too sturdy, unlike the wall he broke down before. Of which caused his knuckles to ache and bleed more.
Two soldiers in masks and unique looking armor walk towards the cube that formed around Dusk. One of them are holding a small sphere of darkness. They're using it to form platforms above the abyss to walk on to reach Dusk.
Once the two soldiers make it to Dusk, they use the sphere to discard the platform that blocks them from Dusk. The two stare at the boy who is ready to fight back against them. But he notices that their armor looks different than the ones he fought before.
"I'm not going with you", Dusk sternly says.
"Crystal, it's really him!", one of the soldiers say to their comrade.
"Focus, Kage. Capture him", Crystal responds to him.
Kage creates a ball of darkness to imprison Dusk. But Dusk quickly tries to dash through them, but Crystal quickly reacts by blocking Dusk. He catches Dusk and shoves him onto the floor.
"You're going to come with us", Crystal demands.
Dusk tries to go around Kage and successfully moves past the two soldiers.
Dusk dashes through the road created by Crystal and tries to leap anywhere else. Crystal notices yet doesn't look behind him. He tightly grips the orb in his hand to try and trap Dusk. But he successfully avoids the trap and leaps onto a tall pillar. Crystal and Kage try to fly and give chase to Dusk. But Dusk jumps away from them and onto another floating platform. He looks behind him and notices the orb Crystal has in his hands. It's glowing as Crystal tries to trap Dusk with other floating platforms. They're flying from opposite sides, facing each other, and attempting to crush Dusk. He realizes that he needs that orb to potentially show him the way out. Just before the platforms slam into each other, he quickly jumps up and lands on top of them. He then stands still waiting for Crystal to approach. Meanwhile, Kage flies with him and continues to conjure the dark spell used to capture Dusk. Crystal takes out a thin, lengthy blade to try and attack Dusk.
"How long are you going to take with that cocoon?" Crystal aggressively asks Kage.
"It's ready!" Kage responds.
Crystal then tries to immobilize Dusk with his blade. Dusk jumps up and avoids the attack. Kage takes the opportunity to launch the spell at Dusk to capture him while he's distracted with Crystal. He launches his arm forward and throws a wisp of darkness. It hones in on Dusk and phases into him without him noticing. Suddenly, a black and purple ovoid forms around him. Surprised, but with little time to properly react, he falls unconscious. Crystal and Kage land on a platform created by the dark sphere.
"We actually did it! Oh my goodness!", Kage exclaims happily.
"This is Captain Crystal. Dusk is secured. I'll make a route to the exit for troops still inside. Mission accomplished. Let's evacuate", Crystal communicates with the army of soldiers with the radio built in their mask.
Kage ensures the cocoon with Dusk inside follows him out of the temple. They, along with the remaining soldiers, head out of the temple. Once everyone evacuates, Crystal throws the orb inside the temple to get rid of it. It floats deeper into the temple as no one looks back. Outside the temple and with Dusk in tow, the remaining soldiers get on a large enclosed storage wagon as Crystal and Kage sit on the chariot the front to steer the twin pegasi. Dusk, who's body is unresponsive, hears a voice from the shadowed figure within him, "As I said. You cannot escape the darkness".
They fly away from the temple.
A duo of robed individuals and a fairy approach the temple just as the rescue party escapes. They notice their enemies soaring in the sky. One of them, with feathered angel wings, glares at them.
"Stay here", they tell the other two, before taking flight.
Without disclosing their appearance, they give chase to Crystal and Kage.
"There's an angel on our six", one of the soldiers in the storage wagon notice.
"Shit...", Crystal mumbles. "Kage, steer."
Crystal stylishly back-flips out of the chariot and flies toward the angel. He unsheathes his long blade and tries to jab the angel. But they evade the attack and try to strike back. They summon a magical bow from their chest and shoot an arrow at Crystal. With immense speed, it pierces through his right shoulder. With the downtime, the angel flies toward the storage wagon. Crystal shakes off the attack, but remembers something significant about the angel in particular. He then realizes their true identity.
"Oh, it's been too long", he mumbles to himself before flying towards the angel.
The angel shoots an arrow at the storage wagon. The soldiers inside panic a bit.
"The angel is attacking the wagon", One of them exclaim to Kage.
"Hold onto Dusk with your life", Kage orders.
He steers the chariot sporadically to throw off the angel's shots. However, the angel knows that means nothing with the speed of his arrows. Within the clear enclosure of the storage wagon, they notice a dark cocoon. Crystal is hot on the angel's tail and successfully pierces through the angel's shoulder with his blade. They shout in pain. Unlike their arrows, Crystal's sword cannot be shaken off so easily.
"I know it's you, Akari", Crystal tells the angel. "It's been one hundred years."
They don't respond. He tries to summon an arrow to shoot at Crystal.
"I knew Elysium's barriers have just fallen but you act fast", Crystal continues.
With Akari's body pierced through the sword, Crystal swings it downward, flinging Akari straight down to the ground below. Akari is weak, but while he falls, tries to heal his puncture wound using light magic. With the light in his heart, his wound slowly closes itself. He lands on his feet when he reaches the ground. He gets a running start and with a large flap of his wings, he is propelled up and takes flight to give chase once more. Meanwhile, Crystal flies back to the chariot.
"If I know him, he isn't done yet", Crystal says to himself while soaring behind the chariot. "Kage, keep steering. I'll defend from behind".
Kage salutes to show that he understands. And Crystal keeps watch from behind the storage wagon to await Akari's comeback. Pinpointing where the chariot is, Akari summons his bow and aims directly at it. He pulls back the bowstring and using light magic, he summons three arrows of pure light. In a flash, he fires, the shots pierce through the chariot and attack Crystal in the process. The damage from the attack causes the chariot to begin it's crash course toward the ground.
"Abandon ship! Go, go, go!" Kage says, leaping out of the chariot.
All of the soldiers aboard the storage wagon leaped out as well. Kage, using magic from his hand, rescues Dusk from the storage wagon as well and keeps him within his grasp.
"I'll ask the king for a second chariot. You all get the pegasi to land safely, I'm going to deal with the angel". Crystal explains.
But in a moments notice, Akari flashes a bright light using his magic, that distracts the soldiers, Crystal, and Kage as they glance at it. He shoots Kage's hand, causing him to drop Dusk from his grasp. With them distracted, Akari flies down to catch Dusk in the cocoon and takes him back to the two other robed individuals. Flying as fast as he can toward them to get away from the soldiers. Using light magic dwelling within his fingertips, he slowly weakens the cocoon. The layers peel off and Akari can see Dusk's face faintly within the darkness. He breathes a sigh of relief.
"You'll be safe soon", Akari whispers to him.
When he lands, the other robed individual runs to Akari. The fairy follows them. One in a red robe takes off their hood and reveals themself to be an elf.
"Is Dusk in there..?", the one in the red robe asks.
"Is he okay?", the fairy asks.
The fairy grows to life size. She is wearing a blue robe and she removes her hood.
Akari kneels and lays Dusk on the grass. He takes off his purple hood. He nods his head. Answering both the elf and the fairy's question. They both sit with Akari. He summons a sharp light arrow and jabs it into the cocoon, then cuts the cocoon to open it quicker. He pulls Dusk out of it. His body is unresponsive and cold.
"He has a heartbeat, I know that much. It's faint but it may take a while for him to wake up", Akari tells the others.
He holds Dusk close to himself. Tears start to form in Akari's eyes.
"It's been so long. I can't wait to see you again", Akari tells Dusk.
The fairy casts a teleportation spell and warps the elf, Akari, and Dusk away to safety.
Meanwhile Crystal and Kage's attempt was thwarted. Crystal, frustrated, tells everyone to head back to the castle. While everyone feels defeated after their failed attempt to capture Dusk, Crystal mutters to himself.
"These enemy doesn't quit. The light will expire again".
Deep in the dungeon of Chūshin Castle, a bruised angel lays asleep. She suddenly wakes up by an extremely painful migraine that stings her mind. She screams in pain as an ominous choir's hymns fills her ears. A shadowy figure of darkness appears before her. They gently speak to the angel.
"Dawn... open your eyes", they say.
Dawn gently opens her eyes to see the dark figure.
"Who are you?", Dawn says, full of fear. "How did you get in here?!"
"I am the thoughts you have neglected", the figure says.
Dawn looks in horror, "You're darkness. You're what I want to kill".
The figure's body changes from a dark shadow to a light glow and continues talking.
"Crystal and Professor Nook checked up on you last week. Crystal hasn't visited you in years. You overheard what they're going to do to you, right?", the figure explains. "Do you want that to happen?"
"I don't want to live anymore", Dawn says, still shook with fear.
Tears form in her eyes. Not even showing an inch of emotion, the glowing figure continues.
"No. You will not die yet. I am giving you a way out", it explains. "You can exact your revenge on everyone who's hurt you. Repressing the darkness in your heart has done nothing but drain you. Little did you know it was your key out of here".
A way out. A way to escape from the cell that Dawn has lived in. That's all she's ever wanted, but she's given up all hope. Yet this figment of her mind is finally giving her something she's given up on for decades.
"I can't do this anymore. I'm so tired", Dawn says while tears fall from her eyes.
"The only person you thought you could trust had abandoned you", the figure says. "You wouldn't want to escape like he did and hunt him down?"
She remembers and her eyes widened. Something sparks in her but she instantly discards the feeling.
"No, no, no! I just want to die", Dawn cries.
"You won't. You can't", the figure angrily denies. "You have a purpose to fulfill".
Dawn refuses to look at the glowing figure. Tears fall from her face as she squints her eyes. The vengeful thoughts race in her mind and she tries her best to ignore them.
"You were born with only light in your heart. It makes sense that you'd stay loyal to it. And that's your problem", it continues. "You can't escape the darkness. You've been fighting a losing battle. To kill the darkness you so hate, you must give into it. There's no point in fighting it unless you want to continue the way you are now: Lifeless, tortured, traumatized".
If Dawn continues to fight the darkness that encroached her heart, she'll remain as an empty husk of a being with a heart that endlessly fights a losing battle. Who is this figure? Why does it come now instead of any other time in the past? She thinks and thinks. But she is suddenly snapped out of her hallucination by footsteps.
It disappeared, it was all an illusion in her mind. However, it left behind a very real, physical, plant that sprouted in between the stone crevasses where the figure stood. A strange, black rose. Dawn notices it and glares at it before it withers away.
The footsteps become more clear. Professor Nook walks toward Dawn's dungeon cell. He holds a leather bag full of supplies, intending to use them.
Dawn recognizes the footsteps and immediately screams in panic. Was it time to do what Crystal and Professor Nook were planning to do to her? She assumed as much and couldn't help but sob profusely, scream, and quiver in pure dread. Her screams echo across the chambers of the prison. Professor Nook hears them and ignores it. He reaches Dawn's cell and notices her. He pulls a key from his lab coat and unlocks the cell to enter it.
"Don't do it! Please!" She yells as tears fall down her face.
She repeats, "I'm not ready" loudly to him.
"Shut up!" Professor Nook aggressively yells.
His yell shuts Dawn up as her heart jumps. It echoes through the halls like her cries did seconds before.
"I'm doing physical examinations. And I prefer my specimens stay quiet and obedient while I do so", Professor Nook calmly tells Dawn. "I have to find a way to reverse this disgrace you've turned into before Crystal gets back".
Dawn obeys out of pure fear. Professor Nook examines her body to ensure it operates as well as it can.
"Why can't you just fucking kill me already", Dawn says with a shaky voice.
"Because!" Nook yells, then calmly continues. "Your family needs you. You cannot and you will never die in here".
He finishes running his examinations on Dawn's body.
"Poor thing, you've been locked in here for over a hundred years, your perception of life, everything, and everyone is mixed and meshed. This is all you've ever known", Professor Nook says. "I almost pity you. You could've been great. Soon you will".
"I hate you", Dawn aggressively whispers. "I will never be one of you".
"Asshole!" Professor Nook yells while kicking Dawn in the stomach.
He knocked the air out of her lungs. Dawn falls over and struggles to breathe. A sinister smile grows across Professor Nook's face. It felt satisfying for him to do. But then he yells out of frustration.
"I feed you every other day. I keep you alive for the King's sake", he says soon before glaring at her. "What a disgraceful curse you were placed under. Me and Prince Crystal will fix you, that disgusting clump of feathers, and that white heart. There's nothing you think you can do to get out of it".
Dawn lays on her side with her hands on her stomach trying to breathe.
"Perhaps the light still in you keeps you determined for a way out. It's about time you give into the darkness within you and become one of us again. Either way you will, there's no hope within these castle walls", Professor Nook explains before he leaves the dungeon.
Those words. "Give into the darkness". The thing her body wants to fight back against. The very existence of it, she wants to destroy. But there's no escaping it. If her neglected thoughts didn't solidify it in her mind, Professor Nook certainly did. Yet she still fights. Even now, when something is going to happen to her today. Something that isn't sitting alone, in a cell, with ragged clothes, internally fighting the darkness growing within her heart from the trauma she's endured. Suddenly, a sting pierces through her head. She groans in pain and puts one hand on her forehead as similar ominous hymns echo throughout her mind.
Black rose petals slowly float downward as the shadowed figure reappears.
"The only way out is to give into me", the figure proclaims. "I can give you the strength you need to leave this place and exact your revenge on everyone who's hurt you. You will not turn into one of them with a power that's entirely your own".
Dawn looks at the figure with squinted eyes.
"I can fix your pain if you just take my hand. Do we have a deal?", the figure says.
It reaches it's hand out, a dark glow emits from the hand, similar to the rest of it's body. In desperation, she forced herself to raise her hand toward the figure. She winces in pain, but without fully thinking it through, she is ready to find out how it feels to finally let go of the light fighting inside of her and let the darkness take over. She won't turn into a batling like everyone else around her. Not like the people she despises. But instead, she'll turn into someone who will exact revenge on them. "Give into the darkness". Ironic when Professor Nook said it; Dawn gave up hope a long time ago. And now...
With the little strength she could muster, she held onto the figure's hand. The hallucination ends. Suddenly, a black rose appears where the figure once stood. Give into the darkness, she did. For the first time, she felt as if a weight was lifted from her shoulders. She could breathe again. She laid on the floor comfortably, then her eyes slowly closed, and her breathing was deep. The breaths turned into snores, and her consciousness slowly pulls itself into a deep, comforting slumber.
