My educational and research experience is very interdisciplinary. I hold degrees in chemistry, biochemistry, and microbiology. In graduate school, at the U. of Minnesota, I was able to unite my interests, studying bioinorganic chemistry, my thesis work required various skills in biophysics and physical inorganic chemistry, employing advanced techniques in transient kinetics and spectroscopy. My doctoral and postdoctoral research has focused on understanding small molecule activation involved in the oxygen- and nitrogen-cycles. As a Postdoctoral Research Assistant I studied the mechanism of electron transfer and substrate reduction, by the metalloenzyme nitrogenase, and the mechanism of C-C bond formation by a cytochrome P450, CYP121 from Mycobacterium tuberculosis, a potential drug target for tuberculosis antibiotics. I find teaching very rewarding and hope to excite students about science in the world around them, and in the process by which scientific knowledge is discovered.
