Goals and Target Outcomes

You will find the complete list of Module Goals and Target Outcomes below.

The School2Home-SMCOE online professional learning component is designed to assist teachers in using technology to support teaching and learning in their classrooms. It was designed to provide a framework for customization and letting teachers personalize professional learning. Teachers were allowed to choose to submit a competency-based opt-out request for each module and principals/coaches were asked to review the outcomes for each module and to decide if a teacher was demonstrating those outcomes in their classroom practice. It used the ISTE Educator Standards as a basis for the creation of the course.

Many districts are having great difficulty in finding substitutes to release teachers for professional learning and many teachers prefer not to leave their classrooms. The decision to provide an online course was made to solve these problems. It is strongly advised that districts provide a face to face session for the first one or two modules and for the last module.

Module 1 Understanding School2Home and Digital Learning

Module 1 provides the participant an opportunity to explore how to take an online course, introduces you to School2Home and beginning concepts of digital literacy.

Through participating in this School2Home module, you will have the opportunity to:

    • become familiar with the School2Home project, the website, the 8-module curriculum, and resources available there.
    • explore and become familiar with the SAMR model, learn about tools for implementing a technology-rich curriculum.

When you've successfully completed this module, you should be able to:

    • define digital literacy and be aware of resources that explore how to integrate digital literacy strategies into teaching practice.
    • think about how to specifically and concretely integrate technology into daily classroom practice.

Module 2 Harnessing the Power of Parent Engagement and Education

Module 2 provides the participant an opportunity to explore several strategies to increase and improve parent engagement within your classroom and at your school site. This is a topic that needs to be thought about deeply since it is the one factor that is proven by research to be one of the most important considerations for student academic success.

Through participating in this School2Home module, you will have the opportunity to:

    • become familiar with the School2Home parent training components.
    • learn about the differences between parent involvement and parent engagement.
    • understand the importance of parent engagement in student academic achievement.
    • review websites created for home use and parent engagement in student’s academic work.

When you've successfully completed this module, you should be able to:

    • use a variety of technology strategies related to parent engagement resources.
    • be able to implement at least one new activity that will support improved parent engagement in your classroom.

Module 3: Encouraging Digital Citizenship

Most school districts have well-defined plans to help students navigate and think about the challenges that they face in the digital sphere. This module focuses more on teacher responsibilities and responses to embedding digital citizenship in classroom activities.

Through participating in this School2Home module, you will have the opportunity to:

    • deepen your understanding of digital citizenship and the topics it encompasses (e.g., cyberbullying, Internet safety, etc.).
    • explore strategies for supporting your students to grow in responsibility and become upstanding digital citizens (“behave safely, and participate responsibly in our digital world”), by incorporating digital citizenship curriculum into academic lessons.
    • understand legal frameworks and your district’s policies regarding digital citizenship.
    • examine strategies for responding to incidents.

When you've successfully completed this module, you should be able to:

    • explain to students and parents, your district's policies on digital citizenship.
    • create and implement classroom activities designed to make your students better digital citizens.

Module 4: Moving Towards Personalized Learning

N.B. This module mentions the use of a specific online resource, NewsELA. School2Home does not specify or endorse software programs or online resources. NewsELA is only used as an example of a resource that your district may use. Each user group would customize the format to direct participants to the resources endorsed by the district or site utilizes.

Module 4 provides information about personalization, individualization, and differentiation strategies and how to use them in classrooms and lesson design. You will explore the digital resources that your school site and or/school district has access to for use in your own classroom.

Through participating in this School2Home module, you will have the opportunity to:

    • explore foundational concepts for “personalizing learning.”
    • explore Newsela as a solution for differentiating reading levels for informational text.
    • further develop your proficiency (knowledge and skills) using G Suite for Education to support student learning.

When you've successfully completed this module, you should be able to:

    • describe and/or provide at least one example of what distinguishes an approach to personalized learning from an approach to differentiating learning.
    • access the Newsela solution and be able to successfully navigate and begin to use this service.
    • access and use one or more resource sites focused on using G Suite for Education to support learning and teaching. Additionally, you will have explored at least one concept for how to improve your teaching practice using G Suite for Education as a platform/solution.

Module 5: Implementing Digital Pedagogy and Learning Part 1

N.B. The following modules leave considerable time for a participant to have choice and voice towards personalizing their learning. The creation of project and plans for individualized use are embedded in this and the following modules.

Frameworks/Models for Digital Technology and Learning: TPACK

Module 5 provides you an opportunity to explore the TPACK framework and how it might support the evolution of your teaching practice. TPACK stands for Technological, Pedagogical, and Content Knowledge and is regarded by many as a useful model for considering HOW to integrate WHICH technologies to support student learning of content and skills, and effective instruction (pedagogy) by teachers.

Through participating in this School2Home module, you will have the opportunity to:

    • explore and deepen your knowledge and understanding of the TPACK framework/model.
    • consider the interrelationships and interplay between content, pedagogy, and technology as drivers for the design of learning experiences.

When you've successfully completed this module, you should be able to:

    • describe the structure and purpose of the TPACK model.
    • understand how TPACK supports educators to evolve their practice by exploring the interrelationships of pedagogy, technology, and content knowledge.
    • be able to convey how you yourself would use a TPACK approach to improve your practice designing and facilitating learning experiences.

Module 6: Implementing Digital Pedagogy and Learning Part 2

Frameworks/Models for Digital Technology and Learning: Flipped Learning

Module 6 provides you an opportunity to explore flipped learning and begin (or continue and deepen) your practice using this methodology.

Through participating in this School2Home module, you will have the opportunity to:

    • explore and deepen your knowledge and understanding of the Flipped Learning framework/model.
    • consider the interrelationships and interplay between content, pedagogy, and technology as drivers for the design of learning experiences.

When you've successfully completed this module, you should be able to:

    • describe the structure and purpose of Flipped Learning and be able to describe and discuss this with your colleagues (participate in the group discussion on flipped learning).
    • be able to convey how you yourself would use a Flipped Learning approach to improve your practice designing and facilitating learning experiences.
    • develop your own screencast using Screencastify. After you complete your screencast, post the URL and a reflection of your experience. You can access this activity from the Modules tab.

Module 7: Extending Student Digital Learning Experiences

Module 7 provides you with the opportunity to revisit earlier topics and to deepen your personal knowledge and to conceptualize how you can apply that knowledge to teaching and learning in your classroom. In this module, you will have the opportunity to:

    • review previous learning and further deepen your knowledge and understanding of the SAMR framework/model.
    • conceptualize a selected lesson at each of the different levels of SAMR.
    • revisit previous topics (namely G-Suite, Flipped Learning, and Newsela) and further develop your knowledge, skill, and proficiency using them.
    • explore concepts of digital literacy and opportunities to promote digital literacy through student learning experiences.

When you've successfully completed this module, you should be able to:
