I am Ruzaika, a dedicated CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) educator, currently serving as a teacher at Sulaimaniya College, a prestigious secondary school situated in Kegalle district, Sri Lanka. My journey into education began at the esteemed University of Peradeniya, where I earned a Bachelor of Science degree with a focus on Chemistry and Zoology. Passionate about sparking curiosity and fostering a love for learning, I have devoted my career to inspiring young minds through the wonders of science.
Since 2014, I have had the privilege of guiding students across grades 6 to 11 in both bilingual and Tamil medium classes, nurturing their understanding and appreciation of scientific principles. My approach to teaching goes beyond sharing knowledge; I strive to create active and engaging learning experiences that leave a lasting impact on my students. I am committed to exploring new methods and techniques to make learning not only informative but also enjoyable.
With a strong belief in the transformative power of education, I am dedicated to empowering the next generation with the skills and knowledge they need to flourish in an ever-evolving world.
My teaching philosophy centers on cultivating a love for learning that extends far beyond the pages of a textbook. I believe in empowering students to become independent thinkers and self-regulated learners who can blossom in the ever-evolving world of the 21st century.
While knowing the curriculum is important, I want my classroom to be a place where students actively explore, not just listen quietly. I want them to work together, have fun, and really understand what they're learning. Instead of just listening to me talk, we'll discuss things, do activities, and work on projects that make them think and connect what they're learning to real life.
To help students become independent learners, I ask them to come to class ready, having already understood the main ideas from their reading. This lets us go deeper and look at things from different angles. We focus on understanding and using what they've learned, not just memorizing facts.
I want my students to be curious, work together, and explore new things. Further I aim for students to utilize technology in their learning process and to engage with their studies through technological exploration. This way, they'll have the skills they need to do well in school and in life. They'll graduate as people who love learning and are ready to face whatever challenges come their way. That's really important in a world that's always changing.
I express my heartfelt gratitude to our esteemed lecturers and supervisors, Dr. Harsha D. Wijesekera and Dr. Priyatha Nanayakkara, for their invaluable guidance and unwavering support throughout this endeavor. My sincere appreciation goes to SLIIT (Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology), for providing me with a wonderful opportunity to learn and explore the realm of CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning).
I am grateful to the principal of my school for granting me the permission to carry out my action research. My gratitude extends to the peer teachers who lent their support and assisted me in this research study, as well as to the students and parents who enthusiastically supported the intervention plan.
