Crystal Carbon Dragon

Stage 0.1.8 - short-term memory... RAM

Which RAM memory is the best for the AMD Ryzen?

The question which RAM memory is the best for the AMD Ryzen is filling any relevant forum, review and newsgroup. Unfortunately, some benchmarks for the comparison are not always helpful - missing important information.

Even if everyone is talking about the notorious RAM with B-Die chips, one should not ignore the details of AMD, some first benchmarks, experience of other users and some facts and myths!

Frequently asked questions

RAM configuration & speed's guaranteed by AMD

  • 2666 MHz for 2 DIMM's in dual channel and single rank
  • 2400 MHz for 2 DIMM's in dual channel and dual rank
  • 2133 MHz for 4 DIMM's in dual channel and single rank
  • 1866 MHz for 4 DIMM's in dual channel and dual rank

All speeds over the mentioned is considered as overclocking and is not guaranteed - even if these are listed in the QVL of the motherboard.

Luckily, Ryzen leaves a lot of room in the game ... but can also be smaller due to the silicon lottery or missing support for some DDR4 chips in the AGESA code.

Since Ryzen and related AM4 motherboards are not yet very long on the market, there are still a few "disagreements".

Sweetspot / best bang for your bucks/euro/pesos

The sweetspot with single rank RAM is at 3000 MHz... therefore with dual rank at 2666 (2667) MHz. Since the price of dual rank RAM with 3000 MHz is also still very interesting, this offers itself of course also.

Above, the performance of RAM does not increase significantly any further.

Should I take the blue, red, black or yellow RAM sticks of the series? - all are the same except for the colour?

In principle one should expect that the manufacturer within a series or also within a series with different colour, will use the same DDR4 chips. These expectations are disappointed with some manufacturers, in some cases.

The following providers of RAM sticks are noticed here:

  • Corsair
  • G Skill
  • Kingston

From the point of view of production and sales, it is quite understandable - for buyers a "little" fiasco.

Partially one can still guess the content by means of a revision number. In the store you can perhaps take this into account, but with the online purchase it becomes almost impossible.

How far one is now investing time in such a provider, is left to everyone.

Memory Speed and CAS Latency or CL

It 's always amusing to read statements like 3200 CL18, CL20, CL22 or other similar curiosities... but the Total Completion Time is in such cases slower than with ex. 2400 CL14. Higher speed are now not always better.

Memory Speed and CCX Interconnect Infinity Fabric

Yes, there is a connection between the two. Some bad results in tests of the Ryzen is caused by non-optimized software. Some software manufacturers have already improved and with future titles it will probably be better from the beginning.

To lift its memory to exorbitant speeds only to fix a software error, is left to everyone.

Single rank or dual rank with Ryzen?

Short: Buy the fastest dual rank RAM you can afford which is on the QVL from your preferred motherboard or RAM.

... or go for a small risk and buy dual rank RAM which is not on one of the lists. (With a little luck you can find in the internet experience reviews of other users).

Since the DDR4 chips used on the market are comprehensible, the chances of compatibility with non-listed RAM sticks are not bad. In addition, the manufacturer can not test all the memory available on the market.

How to compare single rank vs. dual rank RAM @Ryzen

Same speed does not mean the same performance. Dual rank RAM is more powerful even at lower speed - especially in games!

Compare at least:

  • 2400 MHz dual rank against 2666 (2667) MHz single rank
  • 2666 (2667) MHz dual rank against 3000 (2933) MHz single rank
  • 3000 (2933) MHz dual rank against 3200 MHz single rank

What is the best DDR4 Ram for Ryzen?

Yes, the B-Die seems currently running with the best compatibility for overclocking - is also obvious because the CPU is from the same semiconductor manufacturer and the AGESA code is probably optimized at the beginning for this. Whether from time deficit, coincidence, necessity, or financial interest has been put aside. At least many brave buy Flare X and comparable.

Already with the last AGESA update the compatibility with various chips was extended. With the upcoming update to AGESA 1.0.0.6, many more - including dual rank - will be added.

Regardless of, the dual rank RAM offers some advantages:

  • Better performance at lower speed
  • Mostly cheaper price compared to single rank at same speed
  • Noticeable higher minimum frames in games
  • Noticeable higher maximum frames in some games
  • Noticeable higher maximum 99% frames in games

The advantage of higher maximum frames should not be overrated - at the latest from 60-165 frames upwards it makes for many anyway no more difference. On the one hand, the GPU must participate and, of course, the monitor.

However, you will soon notice higher minimum framerates.

Conclusion
