Authors Note: For the most part, I tried to keep Phasm lore mostly stand-alone. There is, however, the occasional mention of Stardragons, Harevoyants, etc. Feel free to disregard any info that doesn't interest you or fit into your story. Thanks!
Appearance & Origins
Described as graceful, willowy creatures, these nebula-maned celestials watch over the mortal realm, and have done so for eons. They are remnants of the god who birthed their galaxy, left behind to care for the planets that were blessed with life. Ever loyal to their creator, they remain true to the task.
Height
An average Phasm is roughly 5-6ft (150-180cm) not including mane, ears, crown, or horns. The smaller “Phae” variety range from 6in-2ft (15-60cm).
Lifespan
Phasms are immortal and do not age or even "die" in a meaningful way. The closest approximation to death may be the dissipation of their aetheric energy, though it will naturally reunify over time, unless purposefully obstructed or absorbed.
While sleep and sustenance are unnecessary, many Phasms chose to engage anyway, as these are enjoyable hobbies, and help them to relate to the mortal races.
Sex, Gender, & Reproduction
Biologically, all Phasms are asexual. They can, however, chose to display sexual traits and use gendered pronouns if desired. Furthermore, these traits can be altered at any time.
Unsurprisingly, this means that Phasms also reproduce asexually. Though there is hardly any need to propagate, they are capable of dividing their energy in half, using it to birth new Phasms. It is worth keeping in mind that, while plentiful, Aether is ultimately a finite resource, so this act cannot be done perpetually without consequence.
Language
Phas: An ethereal language made all the more enchanting by the fact that Phasm voices are polyphonic, or multi-toned, and harmonize with themselves. The language avoids harsh consonants and guttural sounds, and is more akin to a pleasant hum or melodic whisper.
Manes
Phasms are wreathed by nebulous manes which gently coil and coalesce like plumes of smoke. They are dotted with starlight and shimmering cosmic dust, but can take on unique properties as the individual is exposed to certain elements or concepts.
Tails
Like their manes, the roiling tails of Phasms constantly move a and reshape themselves like churning clouds. Interestingly, physical contact will gently still the ever coiling nimbus, allowing the tail to be touched. A fortunate occurrence, as they are quite soft. Tufts, tassels, and fins sometimes sprout off the tips of longer tails.
Ankle Wings (Optional)
Ankle wings allow Phasms to gently float above the ground, giving them a graceful "gait" as they skate around effortlessly. They can form in pairs on both the inner and outer ankle, or as a single wing on each foot. ARTWORK TO BE REVISED
Soul Gems (Optional)
Soul Gems are any sort of gemstone like decoration that appears on a Phasm. They come in all shapes, sizes, and colours, and often glow or have shimmering, opalescent flecks. These Gems are said to have been a gift from the goddess of the neighbouring Bijou Galaxy. ARTWORK TO BE REVISED
Halo & Horns (Optional)
As with many other Phasm traits, halos and horns tend to have elemental or themed accents in accordance with the Phasms interests. Horns can be singular or come in pairs, and halos or crowns can either rest atop the head or radiate from behind.
Elbow Drapes (Optional)
Description TBA. PLACEHOLDER ARTWORK.
General
Phasms come in three varieties, depending on the realm in which they reside. SECTION REQUIRES TRIMMING.
Phasms of the Celestial Plane
The default and most plentiful of Phasms reside in the Celestial Plane. It is described as a divine and heavenly realm, with days basked in soft light, and nights blanketed by a gentle mist. Starlight shimmers underfoot with every step, and the ordinarily distant moons and planets turn lazily just overhead, bobbing in a sea of cosmic dust and winding nebulae.
The Phasms who inhabit this realm come in two varieties, the first of which being the elementally aligned. Working close with specific elements will eventually cause a shift in the physical appearance of a Phasm. Astral is considered the "default," but there are several other elements, including arcane, water, fire, nature, shadow, and so on.
The second variety are the Spirit Guardians, who take up the mantle of mythological heroes and deities, as told by the mortal races. The trade off for becoming a beloved demigod is that one must give up their original sense of self in fulfilling their role.
Phae of the Mortal Plane
The diminutive, fairy-winged Phae have taken to life within the Mortal Realm. It is here that life flourishes, seasons change, reality is governed by the laws of physics, gravity, and the passage of time. Most creatures are born into, and only know of, this realm.
And this is probably why the pixie-like Phae do not quite fit in. Much like folklore involving fairies, the Phae are rather oblivious to mortal affairs, their troubles, their insistence on "aging," and so on. Phae live in the moment and are unconcerned with the future or its consequences - they only want to laugh, play games, eat piles of sweets, and play tricks on mortals.
Thankfully, they are only mischievous at worst - sure, Phae may steal your name, but they'll give it back in a day or two. Until then, you can have their name. Hope you can pronounce "Tangwystl."
Despite living in the Mortal Realm, Phae are rarely seen by mortals, as they often reside in far off lands, deep within enchanted forests and hidden away in the mists. Their kingdoms are small, like the Phae themselves, and are built within the trees and oversized mushrooms. They decorate their little homes with flowers, fairy lights, and whatever wee knick knacks they "borrow" from mortals.
Phasmares of the Elysian Plane
A realm of stasis and stagnation, the Elysian Plane is where the Phasmares and other devilish creatures reside. The sun is permanently eclipsed by a pitch black moon, allowing only the corona to be visible. It appears as a halo of sinister red light during the day, and fades to a ghostly blue ring at night.
The Elysian Plane is accessible via waygates, which are often extremely subtle (e.g. two unassuming stones, or a dead tree forming an archway.) Mortals who have stumbled into this realm and returned to tell the tale mention a feeling of being turned upside down, and the air is thick and heavy, with a subtle metallic odor.
Phasmares who have taken up a spiritual mantle here are not nearly as benign as their Celestial counterparts. They are cautionary tales made manifest, coming to life as cryptids and prowling the fog-choked forests with baleful intent. Those who do not become malign spirits might instead choose to live alongside other Phasmares or the Strzyga who call this realm their home. Alternatively, they might instead pursue a solitary life in the endless forests, shooing off the occasional roving bands of Blighted Starrobbers.
The only visual difference between Phasms and Phasmares is the mane. A Phasm mane sparkles with starlight, whereas a Mare mane warps the light around it, not unlike a black hole.
Though they are not obligated to follow an "occupation," most Phasms find themselves naturally drawn to a particular calling. The following is a list of some of the more prominent followings, but there are numerous specializations one can choose from. ARTWORK TO BE ADDED TO HELP BREAK UP WALLS OF TEXT.
Ethereal Court
Mana Keeper
Mana Keepers maintain ley lines, mana wells, and other magical fonts, ensuring they neither dry up nor overflow. They also prevent any extreme elemental activity such as firestorms or wild overgrowths.
Soul Shepard
These benevolent reapers ferry the recently departed to the next life, answering their questions and providing comfort along the way. This calling requires a balance of compassion and empathy, while not allowing oneself to become overly invested.
Spirit Guardian
In plain terms, a Spirit Guardian is a Phasm who has taken the mantle of a minor benevolent deity, as imagined by mortals. They can represent anything from geographical locations, such as mountains and rivers, to more abstract concepts such as love and destiny.
Welkin Court
Sky Watchers
Cloud formations and air currents fall under their jurisdiction, and they regularly collaborate with the Aqueous Court to conjure up rain showers, snow, and other types of precipitation. It is by their skilled hands that beautiful sunrises and sunsets are painted daily.
Night Watchers
Night Watchers serve the lunar guardians and their associated zodiac companions. They are responsible for delivering the wishes & prayers of the people unto them, while also conjuring pleasant dreams for slumbering mortals.
Enspiriters
Any creature that has taken flight can owe their creation to the Enspiriters. From humble birds, bats and insects, to mighty wind serpents and sky whales, the artisans within this lofty court have crafted quite the menagerie.
Aqueous Court
Tide Callers
Phasms within this calling tend to the waterways, directing ocean currents, bringing the tides in and out, and purifying lakes, ponds, and ground, and well water. Mortals pray to them for safe passage across the sea.
The Freezing Ring
"Keep an eye on the snow," might sound simple enough, but this calling not only involves bringing the snows of winter, but also caring for glaciers, polar and mountainous ice caps, and quelling any cryovolcanos that get too unruly.
Life Weaver
The creators of all aquatic-based life, including, but not limited to: Fish, crustaceans, mollusks, marine mammals, reptiles, and amphibians, as well as jellyfish, coral, algae, kelp. Krakens, Leviathans, and Sea Serpents and other behemoths of the deep are also their doing.
Earthen Court
The Verdant Circle
This calling is dedicated to maintaining much of the plant-life, including mosses, flowers, trees, bushes, etc. Their reach further extends to fungi, lichen, and even the process of decay. They work diligently to provide bountiful harvests to farmers and woodcutters.
Earth Binder
Earth Binders enrich the earth with minerals, cultivate gemstone and ore veins, and direct the flow of magma. It is thanks to their guiding hand and vigilance that the world has not endured any catastrophic earthquakes or eruptions.
Life Warden
Lastly, the creators of all sentient, land-based life. They are broken up into two groups - those who tend to the animals, plant & golem creatures, and those who nurture and protect the mortal races. The second division is somewhat recent, as the mortal races were originally non-sapient, but have evolved over the millennia.
General
For the most part, Phasms are rarely seen or spoken of. In fact, most mortals remain oblivious to their existence. The knowledge of Phae is more prevalent, as these pixie-like beings make their way into plenty of bedtime stories and fairy tales. Phasmares, meanwhile, remain almost unheard of, and the already rare sightings are misattributed to other cryptids and creatures.
Stardragons
When the magical ley lines of the Mortal Realm began to dry up, eons ago, Phasms looked to the stars for a solution. The goddess of the neighbouring galaxy instructed the Phasms to rouse the dragons who slumbered in the stars, and bring them to their planet, where they could restore the magic. At least, that's how the story goes.
Harevoyants & Starweavers
The Third Eye or Scrying Eye is a trait shared by both Harevoyants and Starweavers, and, when focused, can allow them to perceive and communicate with Phasms within the Celestial Realm. As such, the three share a fairly close relationship, exchanging information or simply speaking as friends. Still, all three come from relatively private cultures, and so they do not communicate with excess frequency.
Strzyga
Strzyga, once unaffectionally referred to as "Skurge," are a race of Vampyric or Siren-like creatures that have spent much of their history lurking within the Elysian Plane, alongside the Phasmares. Though most Mares prefer solitude, they are, overall, on good terms with the Strzyga, and will offer assistance to those who ask it. Some even exist alongside the Strzyga, acting as advisors, occultists, healers, and the like.
Finally, because I have an inkling this might come up: Yes, they look a lot like Starweavers - this is because Phasms and Harevoyants were both predecessors to the Starweavers. There was a time when I was no longer able to make Stardragons, and so I began an effort to revitalize my older races. I have since tried to stitch the lore together so that there is reasoning for the shared traits, but it all feels a bit hamfisted if I'm being honest. Regardless, I hope my personal species can find a place in your world alongside their Stardragon cousins!
The updated base is still being worked on, but you can click here to view the original artwork vs some newer concept sketches.
