The square dance occurred on the first day of RYLA. The conferees enjoyed two hours of square dancing with a live band and a lot of sweat... but this event brought the conferees together in a way that no one expected. The conferees met so many new friends and bonds. Many broke out of their shell and found new confidence.
At Mt. Saint Mary’s College, the participants went through a meeting and or course renowned to be “College 101”. As the name indicates this course was centered around college. Most of us are sophomores becoming juniors or even juniors becoming seniors. They believed it’d be informative for us to learn and just hear about college to give us a feel. From the counselors we learned about their life, upbringing, shortcomings and information we didn't expect to hear: How many colleges they applied to, reassurance that we would have enough time to achieve our goals at a pace we’re comfortable with. Towards the end we got to separately meet with counselors to hear in-depth experiences alongside their advice about colleges, universities, how to apply and proper planning.
The Olympics were a custom made event, similar to field day at school. A day, place and time where we all came together in friendly competition. These competitions were of course planned and thought out by the counselors, all were fun. Events that included running, teamwork, coordination, trust and faith within your teammates to ensure a higher chance at victory. Outside and inside we all worked towards finishing at a quicker pace than the other team but at a pace that worked well with everyone. The “secret” to winning was synchronization and communication between your team, everyone having their roles and fulfilling them to the best of their abilities. It was really fun and energetic, everyone had a chance to participate; really good exercise.
The invention convention went how it sounds, an event where we were divided into groups and were expected to invent something from essentially nothing. Distributed into groups of fifteen, we all were given a bag full of random items. These items of course weren't told to us beforehand and came as a surprise, we had about 30 minutes to put it all together and compose an act to showcase our inventions. Furthermore, we were expected to come up with a jingle advertising our inventions as well. Layers of creativity were displayed, almost like comedy acts, where everyone was laughing and enjoying themselves.
This event took place on the second night of RYLA. Conferees were randomly assigned groups and were told a topic and they had to act it out. The conferees were given a piece of paper that had what type of person they will be. This activity showed the conferees what type of people in a group are. Some examples were the energizer. The energizer made sure that everyone was included and everyone's ideas are included. The initiator made made the first move and made the plans.
This event took place on the third day of RYLA (Wednesday). Many conferees displayed their talents such as yo-yo tricks, singing, dancing, poetry, and so much more. This event brought people out of their shells and showed tricks that no one would have expected. There was a lot of laughs, giggles, snaps and claps. The atmosphere in Hudson Hall was unmatched and such a great experience.
Concluding Tuesday night was a participation event, a general combination of all the counselors and conferees. Conferees were given the opportunity to change clothes during dinner. Conferees entered the gym and danced to a number of songs from Pop Smoke's "Dior" to Miley Cyrus's "Party in the USA". Conferees enjoyed refreshments and had a great time dancing with one another. Overall, the dance brought conferees closer together and made a memorable experience.
