From December, 2023 to March, 2024, I was called to do military service in Taiwan. To me, it's not only a test of my physicality, but my mentality. I overcame tests like shooting, 3K jogging, 21K marching. There were many times that I wanted to quit since my legs were in pain and I got some blisters on my toes. I just told myself, "There are something in my life that I can't run away from." I was proud of myself passing all the tests, even though the tests were small pieces of the regular army took. During my free time in the camp, I read lots of books about financial planning and relationships. I even started learning Japanese. I used to regard this 4-month military service as a waste of time, but looking back, I didn't waste my time there.
In September, 2023, I was invited back to my alma mater, NSYSU, to deliver a speech for freshmen of College of Management. I talked about career planning and the resources accessible to them that they could make good use of throughout their college life.
Inspired by the book "Designing Your Life", I shared that we were all designers of our lives, and we could change our lives into what we longed for. To design our lives, first, we have to know what lifestyle we want. Then we'll realize what skills or knowledge we need to be better at. The blueprint of our life will not only guide us when we are hesitant, but encourage us to stick to it during difficult time. From my perspective, designing my career helped me prepare for what I'd go through, such as compromises to make and knowledge to improve. I sometimes felt lonely when studying abroad, but I told myself it's what I had to go through to receive the bachelor's degree I longed for. The blueprint of my life also encouraged me to dig deeper into the field of marketing and advertising. I enjoy living my life purposefully with the blueprint.
For those freshmen, I listed some career resources provided by the college they could make good use of. I recommended them attend career lectures to have basic understanding of different careers and ask for some advice when searching for internships. In the end, I encouraged them dare to design their lives and explore their interests in their college life, probably the best timing throughout their lifetime.
Throughout the preparation of this webinar, I gained lots of new insights about my role in team. I used to be the last one sharing my opinions or even stay silent throughout the whole meeting. This time, as it was a two-people team, I chose a different route and spoke up first in meetings. It ended up that my partner liked my ideas and our collaboration was pretty smooth and efficient. This experience of webinar showed me the benefits of speaking up for myself and being proactive in team projects.
I completed this course in October, 2021. From this course, I learned to be a team player by knowing how a leader leads a team. I realized the challenges that we'd meet in team building include goal setting, delegation, and team communication. Now, when I feel the collaboration doesn't work out well, I can find out where the problem comes from and solve it quickly.
