Basic Beekeeping is a complete three-day course in beekeeping to be held on two full classroom days with one mandatory field time.
It is offered by the Raritan Valley Beekeepers Association and presented by Adele Barree, Cornell Certified Master Beekeeper and other beekeepers.
Successful completion of this class fulfills the education requirement of the NJ state beekeeping regulation (necessary to legally keep bees in NJ).

Day 3, Field Day, takes place at the RVBA apiary in Branchburg Twp. and provides students with an introduction to working with the bees. Students will have the experience of opening and inspecting a beehive themselves and obtain hands-on lessons in recognizing the various components of a hive and colony as well as inspection basics such as smoker lighting, protective gear, and correct use of the hive tool and performing a varroa mite count
Students will receive a copy of the book Storey’s Guide to Keeping Honey Bees, and have access to all slides presented during class as well as supplementary class materials. Students may be able to purchase equipment at class and will be given resources for purchasing bees in spring.

Any New Jersey, full-time student interested in becoming involved in beekeeping can apply for a scholarship to one of the courses offered by a participating NJBA branch. The youth must be a New Jersey resident, a full-time student and between the ages of 16 and 22 as of the start date of the course they are applying for. RVBA is pleased to announce the new Educators Scholarship for our 2025 Beginner Beekeeping Class. The class will be held at the Somerset County Environmental Education Center on Saturday, March 15th and Saturday, March 29th with a half day field day in the RVBA apiary in April. Established in memory of past RVBA members Christine Miller (1964-2024) and Thomas Sadlowski (1945-2024), this scholarship is open to teachers of preschool through community college as well as 4-H leaders, Scout leaders and FFA advisors.
Applicants need not have beekeeping experience, but must have a genuine interest in beekeeping and a plan for sharing, through professional or structured volunteer activities, what they learn in this course.
