In June 2020, Brown University announced that they were cutting their track and field team. Track and field is one of the most diverse sports in college and is one of the few sports that has large Black student-athlete participation.
I saw the cut as an affront on Black educational opportunity, especially as Brown was effectively replacing their track team with sailing, a sport that is very homogenous along racial and socioeconomic lines.
I decided to take action by writing an op-ed on Medium that highlighted the specific racial implications of the decision. The article went viral and a week later Brown reinstated the program.
In the months since, I have helped see four teams get reinstated by leveraging messaging tactics via written articles, social media, earned media, and video content creation. Specifically, I organized and guided groups of students and alumni at four different schools to help them save their programs.
As a result of my efforts, I have helped save over 200 student-athlete opportunities and more broadly have helped to ensure that pathways to an education that benefit Black student-athletes, are protected at those universities.
