Remote and rural areas are oftentimes merely thought about as places people leave and overlooked as migration destinations in themselves. Yet migration is hardly an urban phenomenon. It plays an important role in shaping rural areas today and throughout the past.
Rural Migrantour: Paths of Recovery is a two-year project funded by the European Union’s Erasmus+ programme. Building on the foundations of the Migrantour initiative established in 20+ cities throughout Europe, we turn our sights to developing tours in remote, rural and border areas throughout Europe that promote migration heritage awareness and appreciation.
Migrantour believes that sharing personal stories offers valuable perspective and creates meaningful bonds between people. This is why we set our feet on the ground to discover places through stories and together pave grassroots paths towards greater social inclusion. Our guided walking tours create spaces of intercultural encounter with heart that foster more expansive understandings of cultural heritage, reshaping mental maps and expanding horizons on our shared humanity. This is how we walk the talk of the African proverb, 'the footprints of people who walked together are never erased'.
Migrantour. Places change and so do we. Recognizing diversity, sharing stories, including people.
In this project, we:
Co-create Rural Migrantour routes in remote, rural and border areas in Bulgaria, Greece, Italy and Slovenia together with people with diverse migration backgrounds that are trained to lead such walks >> Visit our About Us page for tour and contact information
Create interactive online digital content related to the role of migration in these areas that complements the Rural Migrantour routes developed. >> Visit our Story Maps page for links to the content we've created
