Welcome to my site and mission to proverbially "run upriver" to create positive change and social justice for children and their families! This notion of running upriver is founded on The Parable of the River, popularized in the 1930s by social reformer and community organizer, Saul Alinsky. The tale has been adapted for various contexts, but in my world of education and counseling, it goes something like this:
Two people were walking alongside a river, when they began to see children floating downriver calling for help. The watchers-by immediately dove into the river, pulling out child after child, but there was no end in sight to the children in need of help. At one point, one of the rescuers abandons the rescue mission and begins to run upriver. The other asks: "Where are you going?? Can't you see that you're needed right here?" to which the runner replies: "Keep up the important work here; I'm running upriver to see where they are all coming from."
And so, here I am. Running upriver, encouraging the rescuers doing the heavy lifting and urging others to look upriver and take action to create systemic change. Will you join me?
I'm a partner, a mother, a sister, a daughter, a friend, an educator, a school counselor, an advocate, a lifelong learner, a sharer of knowledge, and a closet introvert. I have the pleasure of mothering three amazing little people and have had the honor of loving thousands of "work kids" in my ten years as a Professional School Counselor. I have recently taken the jump into higher education to train future school counselors and clinical mental health clinicians. I love running, exploring the outdoors, laughing loudly, eating delicious food, and watching my little people grow.
