In December 2012, Vijay Sethupathi signed up a project for debutant K. Balakrishnan, former assistant of N. Linguswamy who impressed him with his script.[4] The film is said to be set in the 1980s.[5] According to sources, Rummy is a dark romantic thriller. The first look was released on 4 October 2013.[6] While it was reported that actress Remya Nambeesan, a trained classical singer, would be making her Tamil singing debut with this film, the song apparently doesn't appear in the soundtrack.[7][8] Contrary to popular thought, Inigo Prabhakar plays the male lead role although the film was marketed as a Vijay Sethupathi film.[9]

Rummy is the directorial debut of Balakrishnan and the film features Vijay Sethupathi along with the likes of Gayathrie, Inigo Prabhakaran and Iyshwarya. Music is by Imman and all the songs are written by Yugabharathi.

A remarkable composition from Imman which is traditional in every sense with its Malayamarutham base, but also containing some contemporary fusion elements like the guitar and violin, both adding plenty of color to the track. The rhythm is reminiscent of classic Raja but the melody is certainly fresh and decorated with nativity. The transition from the instrumental interludes to the vocal parts is seamless and beautifully organic.
