About

Rufus' Friends' Fund, a registered charity (number 1006484), was founded in 1989 when Rufus Hedderwick, who had severe learning difficulties, died. The object of the Fund is to provide day-activities, breaks and holidays for families, local to Warwickshire, that have a member with learning disabilities.

Often these families live stressful lives, coping with illness, emotional problems, single parenthood, behavioural difficulties and loneliness. A short break away does not remove a family’s problems, but gives them an enjoyable experience, respite and a chance to recharge their batteries.

The criteria for providing a grant are as follows:

Grants average £700-800 per family and applications are received via Social Services or schools. This is because the Trustees of Rufus' Friends' Fund are not qualified to make decisions on applications based on an applicant’s social, medical or financial situation. You can see some example (redacted) applications here.

The Charity is run very efficiently.  It can claim Gift Aid and bears minimal expenses.  Social Services have complimented the Trustees on their rapid response to applications as decisions are usually made within three days. A social worker recently sent the Trustees the following note of thanks, "I have always appreciated the simple application process and the very swift response from the Fund, which is a particular delight in these complicated days". Another sent the Trustees the following, "You make such a considerable difference to the lives of not only the young people but also their parents and siblings".

The Trustees do not expect letters of thanks from beneficiaries but occasionally they are received. A recent letter read, "If the work of the charity is helping other children and families as much as it has ours, it’s value is truly beyond measure".  Another beneficiary's mother said "Thank you for all your help, which makes all my son's dreams possible". Over the last decade the charity has seen a steep rise in applications, both in number and size of individual requests. While the coronavirus pandemic temporarily reduced the charity's grant making function, the trustees foresee even greater need for the charity's resources with the current cost of living crisis.

Rufus' Friends' Fund is always seeking opportunities to fundraise and raise awareness.  Feel free to contact the Trustees if you would like any further information or to assist the Charity in any way.
