More than 100 volunteers—including faculty members and students from BiPSU Department of Forest Science- Biliran Campus—actively participated in the mangrove tree planting activity held last March 19, 2025 in Brgy. Sanggalang, Biliran. This collaborative effort, joined by various government agencies and NGOs, forms part of an approved extension program by the Department of Forest Science and the Municipal Agriculture Office of the LGU of Biliran. The initiative reflects our shared commitment to coastal protection, climate action, and sustainable development.
Dr. Ruffy M. Rodrigo led an insightful session on the policy and legal framework for mangrove conservation, highlighting the importance of regulatory measures in protecting coastal ecosystems. The discussion equipped participants with essential knowledge on environmental laws, governance, and sustainable management strategies to ensure the long-term preservation of mangrove forests
The Department of Forest Science at BiPSU Biliran Campus is taking a leading role in protecting and conserving the mangrove forests of the Municipality of Biliran.
As part of this commitment, at least 50 farmers and fisherfolk participated in a two-day seminar-workshop on Mangrove Forest Nursery Operations held on March 5-6 at the Municipal Function Hall in Biliran.
This initiative, conducted in collaboration with the Local Government Unit of Biliran, aimed to empower coastal communities and stakeholders with the knowledge and skills needed to establish, operate, and maintain mangrove nurseries effectively. By enhancing local capacity, this effort contributes to the long-term sustainability and resilience of Biliran’s coastal ecosystems.
The Department of Forest Science, Faculty of Biliran Province State University, and the Municipal Agriculture Office (MAO) of LGU-Biliran, represented by Municipal Mayor Hon. Myra Abrigo Cabrales, are in the process of formalizing a partnership to advance environmental conservation and sustainable development initiatives in Biliran Province. This proposed Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) aims to establish a collaborative effort focused on the ecological, economic, and social importance of mangrove ecosystems. The initiative, titled "Seminar-Workshop on Mangrove Forest Nursery Operation: A Community-Driven Approach to Climate Change Mitigation and Sustainable Development," seeks to promote environmental stewardship, enhance climate change adaptation strategies, and empower local communities through knowledge-sharing and capacity-building activities. Once finalized, this agreement will formalize the commitment of both institutions to fostering long-term sustainability in the region.
