In this webpage we provide information concerning predoctoral-grants, postdoc positions, and academic and research positions in Spain. We notice that there are further calls related to private and public institutions, and to individual or research group projects, which are not considered here.
For more general information, visit Research Career Path in Spain (EURAXESS website). It includes the following infographic by FECYT.
Fellowships associated with I+D projects (the so-called FPI): Related with specific topics and research groups. Calls are managed by the university or the research insitution of the project leader.
Fellowships for training of university professors (the so-called FPU): National call by the Universities Ministry (usually in January). Applications must be submited with the agreement of a PhD advisor. Call 2023.
Doctoral INPhINIT fellowships by "La Caixa" Foundation: Incoming call for those coming from abroad (having lived less than 12 months in Spain in the last three years). In centers with a Severo Ochoa or María de Maeztu accreditation of excellence (currently, BCAM, CIMNE CRM, ICMAT, IMAG in maths).
These Severo Ochoa and María de Maeztu centers offer own predoctoral scholarships, as well as groups with ERC Projects.
Each autonomous community and each university or institution may have their own predoctoral fellowships calls.
"Juan de la Cierva" Programme
Aimed at researchers with less than two years of postdoctoral experience. Two-year positions, without commitment of stabilization in most of the institutions. The application is jointly with a "host research group" in some Spanish institution (university or research institution). The call for applications is usually issued in December/January, and the resolution in June/July.
"Ramón y Cajal" Programme
Aimed at researchers with postdoctoral experience of at most ten years. Five-year contract in some Spanish university or research institution, at the end of which positions are usually stabilized as Profesor Contratado Doctor or Titular Universitario (see below). It is important to note that stabilization is not automatic, since it requires a positive final evaluation and obtaining the certificate R3 (see Accreditations). The call for applications is usually issued in December/January, and the resolution in June/July.
"Beatriz Galindo" Programee
Programme to attract researchers from abroad. Aimed at researchers with postdoctoral experience of less than (junior) or more than seven years. Four-year contract in some Spanish public university, at the end of which positions are usually stabilized.
Other positions
There are postdoc positions associated to ERC Projects, National grants, and Severo Ochoa and María de Maeztu centers.
Some autonomous communities have programs to attract researchers form abroad. For example, the Beatriu de Pinós programme in Catalonia.
Universities and research centers are also eligible for Marie Curie fellowships.
Postdoctoral Junior Leader fellowships - LaCaixa Foundation.
Some universities offer postdoc positions.
Positions at universities may be of tenure type and of non-tenured type. These positions have associated teaching duties. Applying to tenure positions requires accreditation (see here).
Non-tenured:
Profesor Ayudante Doctor (Assistant Professor) (Profesor Adjunto in Basque Country, Professor Lector in Catalonia): candidates must hold a PhD, maximum 6 years.
Profesor Ayudante (Teaching Assistant): candidates do not need to hold a PhD, but they are usually PhD students.
Tenured, non civil servants:
Profesor Permanente Laboral (previously known as Contratado Doctor) (Associate Professor): full time, PhD required, accreditation required.
Profesor de Universidad Privada (Associate professor): only for private universities, PhD required, accreditation required.
Profesor Colaborador (Lecturer): full time, candidates do not have to hold a PhD, accreditation required, to be phased out.
Tenured, civil servants:
Profesor Titular de Universidad (Associate Professor): full/part time, PhD required, accreditation required.
Catedrático de Universidad (Full Professor): full/part time, PhD required, accreditation required.
In the autonomous regions of Basque Country and Catalonia there are two additional tenured figures, according to relevant prevailing legislation:
Profesor Agregado (Associate Professor): full-time, not a civil servant, PhD required, accreditation required, permanent position equivalent to Profesor Titular de Universidad.
Profesor Pleno/Catedràtic Contractat (Full Professor): full-time, not a civil servant, PhD required, accreditation required, permanent position equivalent to Catedrático de Universidad.
CSIC (Consejo superior de investigaciones científicas - Spanish research council): civil servants, CSIC researchers in mathematics are based on ICMAT, three categories (Científico Titular, Investigador Científico, y Profesor de investigación)
Ikerbasque (Basque foundation for science): Ikerbasque researchers in mathematics are based on BCAM or the university of the Basque Country, three categories (Research Fellow (tenure-track), Research Associate and Research Professor (both tenure))
ICREA (Catalan institution for research and advanced studies): ICREA researchers in mathematics are based on CRM or the universities in Catalonia
ValER (Valencian Foundation for Excellence in Research): ValER researchers in mathematics will be based on Universities and Research Centers of the Valencian Community
Tenure and tenure-track positions by regional programs: positions will be linked to some university or reseach center in the region (similar to CNRS but limited to specific regions in Spain)
