Several international institutions encourage the cooperation among researchers by supporting or hosting research meetings from people all over the world. Here we list some of them in mathematics.
Events can take place in different locations
Centre International de Mathématiques Pures et Appliquées (CIMPA)
CIMPA, founded in France in 1978, is a nonprofit organisation that promotes research in Mathematics in developing countries. It is a UNESCO category 2 center and it is financially supported by Germany, France, Norway, Spain and Switzerland. CIMPA co-organises and sponsors numerous activities in developing countries, in all continents. Each activity is funded through a process of calls for proposals in one of the following categories: CIMPA Schools, CIMPA Courses, and CIMPA Fellowhips.
European Mathematical Society (EMS)
EMS, via different committees, is willing to provide support to several kind of activities.
Meetings Committees: Support for activities organized, co-organized, sponsored or endorsed by the EMS.
Committee for Developing Countries: Support for meetings and events to be held in the Global South.
European Solidarity Committee: Support for activities in places of Europe without adequate funding resources the participation of qualified mathematicians without adequate financial support.
Furthermore, EMS has established a call for EMS - Topical Activity Groups, to foster the integration of scientific cooperation across all of Europe and all mathematical fields.
The Simons Foundation is a nonprofit organization primarily dedicated to supporting four branches of knowledge: mathematics and physical sciences, life sciences, autism research, and education and outreach.
The foundation provides funding for the development of mathematics research worldwide through individual projects and the organization of conferences and thematic programs.
The Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach (MFO)
MFO is an international research centre located in the German Black Forest. The MFO's scientific programme consists of six core programmes: workshops, mini-workshops, seminars, arbeitsgemeinschaft (study group), Oberwolfach Research Fellows (which aim to bring together small groups of 2-4 researchers to conduct joint research, lasting 1-4 weeks), and Oberwolfach Leibniz Fellows (4-12 week stays for young researchers). Proposals for workshops and mini-workshops must have at least one organiser from outside Germany. For Research Fellows, the research group must be geographically diverse (not all researchers must come from the same place).
The Mittag-Leffler Institute (MLI)
MLI is an international research centre that was founded in 1916 by Professor Gösta Mittag-Leffler and his wife Signe, who donated their magnificent villa with its first-class library as a mathematics research institute to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Located on Djursholm outside Stockholm, it is the oldest mathematics research institute in the world.
MLI organises week-long conferences, workshops and schools during the summer season. Proposals must be submitted by a list of 1-5 members who constitute the organising committee.
In the spring and autumn seasons, research programmes are run to facilitate research projects, scientific cooperation and networking and have resident researchers. Proposals must be submitted by a list of 2-4 members who constitute the organising committee (at least one member with a connection to mathematics in the Nordic countries).
The Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences (INI)
INI is an international research institute for mathematics and its many applications at the University of Cambridge. It occupies one of the buildings of the Cambridge Centre for Mathematical Sciences. It is a collaborative space that also hosts scientific programmes in mathematics. During these programmes there are resident researchers, as well as workshops and seminars. Seminars (when the speaker gives permission) are streamed live and, in most cases, made available for viewing after the event.
Centre International de Rencontres Mathématiques (CIRM)
Located in the heart of the Calanques Park near Marseille, the CIRM also organises thematic semesters and welcomes researchers for short stays. Scientists can work together, exchange ideas, share their knowledge and advance key issues in our discipline.
Centro Internazionale per la Ricerca Matematica (also CIRM)
The CIRM in Trento, which organizes programs similar to the Oberwolfach Research Fellows.
Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS)
In Banff (Canada), Granada (Spain), Oaxaca (México), Hangzhou (China), and Chennai (India).
Simons Laufer Mathematical Sciences Institute (SLMath, former MSRI)
Located in Berkeley (United States), SLMath organises many activities, the best known of which are thematic semesters, which bring together researchers working in a specific area, and workshops. They also organise summer programs for undergraduate and doctoral students and offer scholarships to cover accommodation and food.
Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics (ICERM)
ICERM, at Brown University, has the mission of supporting and expanding the relationship between mathematics and computing: to extend the use of computational and experimental methods in mathematics, to support theoretical advances related to computing, and to address the problems posed by the existence and use of computers through mathematical tools, research, and innovation. They organise thematic programs and workshops.
Institute of Advanced Studies (IAS)
IAS, at Princeton, is one of the most prestigious research centers in the world. They organise schools and programs.
American Institute of Mathematics (AIM)
AIM, in Pasadena, California, hosts thematic workshops. It is worth mentioning the SQuaREs program which, like previous programs, allows a group of four to six mathematicians to carry out a research program.
Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IPAM)
IPAM is located at the University of California Los Angeles. Thematic programs of various lengths, workshops, summer schools and research programs for students are organised.
Institute for Mathematical and Statistical Innovation (IMSI)
In Chicago, with programs and schools. It also offers internships.
Institute for Mathematics and its Applications (IMA)
In Minneapolis, IMA hosts thematic programs and workshops.
Instituto de Matemática Pura e Aplicada (IMPA)
In Rio de Janeiro, IMPA offers programs in January and February for students and researchers.
Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Science
In Toronto, it organizes thematic programs and workshops.
Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS)
In Banff (Canada), Granada (Spain), Oaxaca (México), Hangzhou (China), and Chennai (India).
