Day 1
Circle time (read aloud and/or whole group activity):
Rhyming game with aa/bb/cc/dd rhyme scheme: Feed the Whale. Have a picture of a whale. She only likes to eat foods that rhyme with "whale". Have other objects that rhyme with whale: pail, tail, sail, mail, nail, snail. Allow kids to bring up objects that rhyme and feed the whale.
Read aloud: The Snail and the Whale
Notice and discuss the characters, problem and solution in The Snail and the Whale.
Together, write our own story where the characters help one another to solve a problem. Children can draw illustrations for the story.
Centers:
Building Center: variety of blocks with blue cloth to make the ocean. Pictures of bridges can inspire kids to build bridges over the "ocean". Add ocean animal/people figurines to the scene.
Sensory Bins: Fill sensory bin with 2" of water and a few drops of blue watercolor. Provide materials for an exploration of sinking and floating in water.
Dramatic Play: Pretend boat from cardboard/blocks/chairs, pretend fishing poles, stuffed animal or plastic ocean creatures
Library: Julia Donaldson books, books about ocean animals
Art Center: Whale origami or playdough snails
Rug:
Outdoor Experiences (movement/science/art):
Rhyming Scavenger Hunt: Hide objects or pictures around the field. Give children picture checklists and have them go hunting for rhymes.
Play Fish, Fish, Shark! (Just like Duck, Duck, Goose)
Additional songs/stories/games: Snail and Whale Maze and Coloring Sheet, Baby Beluga song,
Day 2
Circle time (read aloud and/or whole group activity):
Read aloud: A Gold Star for Zog
Notice characters, problem and solution in Zog. There is lots of friendship (and helping) in this book too!
Pretend to be a dragon: flying, roaring, capturing a princess, a flying doctor
As we're pretending to be a doctor, make up a story about someone getting hurt. Trace their hand and draw in the bones to make an x-ray. Show where the bone is broken. Wrap up the broken bone with a bandage.
Centers:
Building Center: Variety of blocks with pictures of castles for inspiration. Add animals/people figurines.
Sensory Bins: Fill sensory bin with 2" of water and a few drops of blue watercolor. Provide materials for an exploration of sinking and floating in water. Add a few foam blocks to the water so that kids can build with them in the water (and they *float*).
Dramatic Play: Doctor toys, bandages, band-aids, stethosopes, stuffed animals
Library: Julia Donaldson books, books about doctors/veterinarians
Art Center: Light tables with x-rays and dry erase markers.
Rug: Train set. The train can always move through the castle scenes that kids are building in the building center.
Outdoor Experiences (movement/science/art):
Bubbles: Take bubble solution, a tub and bubble wands to the park (or kids can make the wands from sticks and pipe cleaners). Let them make bubbles and pretend that they are dragons who blow bubbles.
Band-Aid Tag or other variation of tag
Art: Nature journals and colored pencils
Additional songs/stories/games:
Day 3
Circle time (read aloud and/or whole group activity):
Read Aloud: The Gruffalo
Notice characters, problem and solution. Have we noticed any similarities/differences in these three Julia Donaldson books?
Talk about the Gruffalo's creatures and what great describing words the author used. Draw our own Gruffalo together on the white board. Give kids paper to draw their own Gruffalos.
Centers:
Building Center: Variety of blocks with pictures of castles, animal dens, etc. for inspiration. Add animals/people figurines.
Sensory Bins: Fill sensory bin with 2" of water and a few drops of blue watercolor. Provide materials for an exploration of sinking and floating in water. Add a few foam blocks to the water so that kids can build with them in the water (and they *float*). Add animal figurines so that kids can reenact parts of the Gruffalo in the sensory bin.
Dramatic Play: Make a Gruffalo cave from the blue blocks. Add stuffed animals. Pretend to be a Gruffalo or an animal in the cave.
Library: Julia Donaldson books, books about doctors/veterinarians, ocean creatures
Art Center: Build a Gruffalo or a monster from playdough. Put out playdough, googly eyes, pipe cleaners, etc.
Rug: Train set. The train can always move through the castle scenes that kids are building in the building center.
Outdoor Experiences (movement/science/art):
Face Paint: Paint kids face to look like the Gruffalo
Gruffalo Hide and Seek: Hide a rubber snake, stuffed owl, stuffed fox, stuffed mouse. Kids can find them. Or kids can hide them and you can find them!
