These classes are held on some Mondays from 7.30 to 8.30 pm and run by Kate Bould via Zoom. Please email Kate or Neil for log-in details: rscds.sheffield@gmail.com
Our beginners class will start on Monday 6th October and run for at least 6 weeks, (it may be extended to Christmas if there is demand). There is no obligation to be there every Monday, or indeed to start on the 6th - we understand life happens.
Classes are from 7:30 to 9:45 pm at Bents Green Methodist Church Hall, at the junction of Ringinglow Road and Knowle Lane, Sheffield, S11 7PU.
New dancers are asked to have soft soled shoes and comfortable clothing to dance in, and bring a bottle of water or similar to refresh.
Each class will start with everyone (beginners and intermediates) in together to warm up and stretch. There will then be some exercises for learning / improving steps whilst we are still all together in the larger room, and we can watch and learn from each other. The beginners class will then move to another room to learn one or two easier dances at a slower pace.
We will then recombine the classes after the break (tea and coffee not provided, but there is access to the kitchen if anyone wants to make their own) and go through the dances the beginners have been learning.
Any queries, please direct to the branch Email address, Neil (01226 762894), or the Facebook page.
We look forward to meeting anyone who is considering giving it a go!
If you are completely new to Scottish Country Dancing, don't be afraid, as our experienced teacher will ensure that you learn at the right pace. Dance is a great physical activity to get you moving, building cardio endurance and boosting circulation. Scottish country dancing also keeps your brain active! Memorising steps and formations will improve your cognative skills and may be a factor in preventing dementia.
If you are a seasoned dancer wishing to improve your skills, head over to the details of our Advanced Classes.
No. Scottish country dancing is a social activity and you will dance with different partners during an evening of dancing.
Dancing can be energetic, although you can put in as much or as little effort as you like. We recommend that you wear layers of clothes - possibly light trousers or a full skirt, a T-shirt, and something on top for warming up or for the slower dances.
Dancing shoes come in many guises, from ballet shoes, to laced soft shoes, to those with a T bar. All proper Scottish country dancing shoes are very soft and comfortable. Before you buy shoes, you might prefer to come along to the class in soft soled flat shoes (trainers are ideal), see what others are wearing, and see what your teacher suggests.
Your first class is free; thereafter it is £5 per class.
We do encourage you to join the RSCDS, our umbrella organisation. Membership of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society, and the Sheffield Branch, allows you to be a part of a community of dancers, both locally and worldwide, and supports Scottish country dancing. For further details please go to our RSCDS Membership page.
