For my work, I tend to enjoy focusing on illustrative pieces with some type of psychological background. I mainly use watercolor or acrylics to achieve this stylized look
I associate so many deep and meaningful memories with my childhood comfort items, and I feel like without them I would be a different person. To this day when I look around my room filled with countless plastic figures, birthday cards and stuffed animals, I can remember the day I received them, where I was in life and how I felt in that moment. I believe this nostalgic feeling is something so magical that it should be shared with others.
While childhood seems like lifetimes ago, I wish to remember simpler times and associate these memories with items from that time. I find symbolism and deeper meaning within these objects truly interesting. “Comfort Objects”, or Transitional Objects, are the original creative act on the part of a child. The child bestows the object with the ability to soothe them. This is why I chose to use family and friends, as well as myself, to focus on for my work. I feel that even just by looking at the objects people have chosen, and reading the few sentences they wrote based on their piece, we can get a great sense of who this person is without ever truly meeting them. Art is truly the original “virtual meeting place”.
I chose to work with acrylic on canvas because I enjoy the level of detail I can get in certain areas of my pieces while keeping others simplistic. The bright colors used were chosen to mimic children’s toys and story books, and the simple shapes were used in the background to give the whole piece a childlike, coloring book feel.
"These two have been sitting on my bed since the days I got them close to 15 years ago. I remember my nana giving me the smaller one after falling in love with his cute and happy nature. The larger one was given to me by my mom although I can't remember the day she gave him to me. These two still bring me so much comfort on rough days." —Emily

He has been with me throughout the years, sitting on my bed, through various jobs, movings, marriage, children and divorce. He has been a stable and familiar object throughout the years." — Lori

When the time came, my teacher, Mrs. Buy, laid out all these toys on a table. Everyone had their eyes on him, and the only way to get him was being first, which, by the way, was chosen at random. By some miracle I got chosen first and I quickly took him from the table and kept him with me everywhere after that."
