Since joining the Accounting Students Association in August 2019, it has organized over 100 activities including conferences with accounting professionals, community service events, opportunities for networking and many more. Shown below are only a handful of the activities I helped organize as secretary and assist during the 2020 - 2021 academic year.
On Tuesday, October 6, 2020, Mariela Guerra, Talent Acquisition & Business Recruiting Manager for PricewaterhouseCoopers, spoke to the members of the Accounting Students Association about the accounting firm and all the internship opportunities the firm offers students. To begin the info-session, Guerra first spoke generally about the firm to give the students an idea of what PwC is. In doing so, she indicated how the firm has remained at the forefront of COVID-19, as it is constantly innovating with new technology. In fact, PwC has what they know as the Digital Academy, which they use to constantly continue training their employees. In addition, she then listed all the opportunities the firm offers for students to take part in its internships and programs. She explained how the internships they offer usually serve so that the firm may evaluate the performance of their interns and then possibly offer new internship opportunities or job offers. She mentioned that first-year students can participate in various activities and programs offered by the accounting firm. The opportunities she mentioned were "Career Preview, Explore, Start Internship & Advanced Internship." She stressed that the firm accepts second-year students for their “Start Internship,” which is usually the best place to start for anyone who is interested in working with PwC. To finish off the info-session, Mariela showed a video about how the application and interview process for a position with the firm is.
This virtual info-session was given by three Ernst & Young employees, Maribel Valle, Carla Díaz and Luis Lizasuain on Friday, September 18, 2020. The main purpose of the activity was to allow the association’s members to familiarize themselves with the firm. The info-session was begun by first playing a video that showed everyone a glimpse of what the organizational culture is like at EY. After the video, they proceeded to explain more about all the professional services the firm offers like auditing, consulting and taxes. The speakers also spoke about all the benefits the firm offers its employees like 16 week long maternity and paternity leave, medical plans, 13+ paid vacation days, and more. Afterwards, they took the opportunity to showcase many of the different initiatives the firm has organized to give back to those communities in need. Finally, they explained all the different internship programs that EY offers within its different departments, where they mentioned a summer internship for either auditing or consulting and a semester-long internship for taxes.
CPA Juan García Merced gave the members of the Accounting Students Association an info session on the reviews that BECKER offers for the CPA exam. This conference was offered to inform all the members about various products and services that BECKER offers as well as some information about the CPA exam. Merced began the conference by speaking about the exam and covering some key points such as why one should aim to be a CPA, the requirements to take the exam and its parts, among many others. He then continued talking about the various reasons why a student might set the professional goal of becoming a CPA. Among all the possible reasons, he mainly highlighted 5: “prestige”, “career development”, “career security”, “higher salaries” & “job satisfaction”. After that, the CPA went on to explain exactly how the exam is composed and what each part of the exam is made up of. In addition, he offered members some advice regarding the order in which he recommends taking the exams according to their levels of difficulty. It should be noted that 98% of students who pass the CPA exam in Puerto Rico have taken the review with Becker CPA Review.
