Every photo I take tells a story, but my favourite stories are the ones my clients tell. The trust they place in me to capture their most precious moments is a true honour and something I do not take lightly. Here are a few of the incredible stories I’ve had the joy of documenting.
1. Tequilla and Kobe: Mum & Baby Photoshoot at Cosmeston Lakes, Penarth.
One of my main missions as a photographer is to make sure that mothers are seen in front of the camera with their children. It's so easy to be the one taking all the photos, which means you are often lost from your own family story. These moments with your little ones are so fleeting - they really aren't babies for long - and it's so important that you are present in documenting their growth.
Mums, you do so much, you sacrifice so much, and you pour all your love into everyone else, often to the detriment of yourselves. You deserve gorgeous photos with your children to freeze these precious, fleeting moments in time. Having these memories to look back on is absolutely priceless.
In an age where selfies and quick phone snaps are dominant, investing in professional photos that won't just be forgotten in your phone's storage is always worth it. It’s about creating a tangible legacy of your family's story, with you at the heart of it!
I recently had the pleasure of providing such a service for Tequilla and her gorgeous 9-month-old, Kobe. As we were getting to know each other during the shoot, as all mothers love to do, we shared our birth stories. I learned about the harrowing experience they had endured: Kobe arrived 12 weeks early while his parents were on a "baby moon" holiday in Portugal.
My own baby boy spent five days in NICU due to birth complications. Even though he was born at 41 weeks gestation, that time was truly the most anxiety-inducing and dreadful experience. I can only imagine the horrors of not only giving birth 12 weeks early and the sheer amount of time required in NICU, but also being so far from home without your support system. I am totally in awe of brave Tequilla and strong Kobe, and it made this photoshoot that much more special and important.
The love shared between this mother and son was truly special to witness. Kobe, the happiest little boy, beamed at his proud, beautiful mum. It was a joy to see them simply be together.
The lighting on that warm summer morning perfectly reflected the joy of this pair. We started with a lovely, soft diffused light from the cloudy sky, and as the sun began to shine through, it offered the most gorgeous dappled light through the trees. By the end of our session, the lakes were glistening and we achieved the most beautiful backlit shots of the two of them.
It was such an enjoyable session. When your job is so full of joy, it's hard to call it work. That's exactly how I felt on the drive home from this shoot!
Here is what Tequilla had to say about our session:
"We had the most incredible experience with Rhi! She is super friendly and went above and beyond to make sure everything was perfect. From helping us find the best angles to choosing stunning backgrounds, she made us feel so comfortable and confident throughout the entire session. Her talent truly shines through in every shot. I’ll definitely be booking with her again — highly recommended!"
2. Megan, Callum & Bodhi - Family Photoshoot at Porthkerry Park, Barry.
Another core mission of mine is to make sure that both parents are seen in front of the camera with their children. In my own personal experience as the family photographer, I'm the one who's largely missing from my baby boy's story. I know how easy it is for parents to be behind the lens instead of in the frame.
When you think about it, how often is your little family unit truly captured together, showing your unique connection and all those beautiful, candid moments?
I worked with one family to do just that, and little Bodhi, their son, was such a personality - I've never seen so many facial expressions in one hour! We had such a laugh together.
I am not a prescriptive, clinical photographer who puts you into awkward and forced poses that feel unnatural. My mission is to gently guide and encourage so that you feel comfortable and confident, and I allow your personalities to unfurl in front of the lens. I want you to be able to look back and remember these moments as they really were.
There's absolutely never a dull moment when you bring your babies along for a photoshoot, and while they can be unpredictable, that's completely natural and expected! My sessions are flexible and allow for breaks for such occasions. My priority is making sure everyone is comfortable and happy and that the session is as stress-free as possible.
For this early morning session in gorgeous Porthkerry Park, we were blessed with a photographer's favourite conditions - clouds! A cloudy sky gives us the most perfect, balanced light, which means we can be positioned anywhere we please without harsh light or shadows. This allowed us to beautifully reveal the genuine and loving interactions between this little family.
It was absolutely wonderful to see the doting parents with their gorgeous baby boy - it was pure magic. Sessions like these truly light a fire in me and make me strive to produce the best possible final product for you to keep forever.
Here is what Megan had to say about our session:
"We had an amazing experience at our photoshoot with Rhi. We knew we wanted a family photoshoot and loved the idea of having it out in nature as Rhi suggested Porthkerry park. Fantastic location and Rhi was very accommodating when it came to the timings of the shoot she is a very engaging photographer and knows how to make things fun and relaxed throughout. We had a bit of a break in the middle as Bodhi got a little restless but he soon perked up. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking to book in for any occasion. Her work is outstanding! Thank you again so much!"
3. Roisin, Bethan & Ruadhan - Maternity/Family Photoshoot at Jackson's Bay, Barry.
Where, oh where to begin with this shoot? I was so inspired by radiant Roisin's pregnancy that I knew I had to be the one to document her and her family during this beautiful time. I had a particular vision for this beach session - bright, airy, and glowing - just like her.
One of my biggest regrets from my own pregnancy was not having a maternity photoshoot. It’s such a profoundly beautiful moment in a woman's life. The quiet, excited anticipation of welcoming a new little one to love, the pregnancy glow, the joy. These moments, and the connection between the couple and the dreams they have for their new family dynamic, are what I absolutely live to capture.
We were blessed with the weather on this warm summer's evening. The tide was gently pulling out, the sea was calm and serene, and the breeze was light and pleasant. That beautiful diffused light was present once again, gorgeously and gently illuminating this family and the entire scene.
The sun was setting behind the cliffs, leaving the beach in a soft shadow. It was absolutely perfect. The light conditions allowed us to be anywhere we wanted to be along the beach, giving us every opportunity to capture their beautiful connection.
Due to my background as a school teacher, one thing I am immeasurably proud to specialise in, is working with children. Families often speak with me about how nervous they are about bringing their young kids along to sessions - if we think babies are unpredictable, children can be on another level!
However, this is what I absolutely love. There is nothing more fun to me than boisterous and confident kids. I believe that giving a role and a purpose to a child during a photoshoot is absolutely imperative. I make them feel important and an integral part of the session, and when they feel like the star of the show and my creative assistant, we can guarantee cooperation, enjoyment, and genuine smiles.
I had so much fun during this shoot, and in large part because of this little girl, Ruadhan. Parents, please do not avoid having a family photoshoot because you think it might be stressful. I will look after all of you and ensure a fun time for everybody!
Here is what Roisin had to say about our session:
"We had the most magical experience with Rhi capturing our maternity photoshoot! We had a very excitable 7 year old with us too who can be extremely demanding and Rhi was incredible at keeping her entertained and engaged in the whole session! The experience was so lovely and such a treasure to have during pregnancy. We are totally in love with the images and received them in 24 hours! Rhi has done a fantastic job at capturing the moment and provided us with a gift we can keep forever."
Every family, every couple, and every brand has a unique story to tell. My passion is to help you tell yours authentically. If you're ready to capture your story, I would love to hear from you!
