The Royalton Memorial Library is seeking a dependable, friendly, and community-minded Temporary Part-Time Library Assistant to join our team. This position averages 10 hours per week, with flexibility in scheduling.
The Library Assistant provides excellent customer service to library patrons and assists with daily library operations, circulation, programs, displays, communications, and general upkeep. The successful candidate will be comfortable working independently and as part of a small library team.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Operating the circulation desk, including checking library materials in and out.
Creating library cards and assisting new patrons with library services.
Responding to in-person and telephone inquiries in a helpful and professional manner.
Reshelving and organizing library materials.
Ordering and processing interlibrary loans (ILLs), including shipping and receiving materials.
Collecting and maintaining accurate library usage statistics.
Opening and closing the library independently, as needed.
Maintaining a clean, welcoming, and enjoyable library environment.
Creating and maintaining monthly book displays.
Assisting with library programs, events, and fundraisers as needed.
Sharing information about library services, programs, and offerings with patrons and the community.
Drafting and assisting with content for the library's social media pages.
Providing coverage when other library employees are absent.
Performing other duties as assigned by the Library Director.
The successful candidate will have:
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally and courteously with co-workers, patrons, and members of the public.
The ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
The ability to learn and use an integrated automated library system.
The ability to alphabetize and organize materials numerically and to learn and apply the Dewey Decimal Classification system.
Familiarity with computers, standard office equipment, and common digital tools.
The ability to learn, understand, and follow library policies and procedures.
The ability to work independently, exercise good judgment, and manage routine responsibilities.
The ability to lift, reach, stretch, bend, and perform the physical tasks associated with shelving and handling library materials.
This position is performed in a public-service library environment and may require occasional evening and weekend hours.
