Starting in 2024: First 16 USCF 1000+ players play for FREE in every Roshen's Chess Academy tournaments.Â
Commencing from our January 20th tournament in 2024 and onward, the first 16 players for each tournament with a USCF rating of 1000 or above will enjoy free entry into our tournaments. The associated costs will be covered by the Roshen Nair Foundation. It's worth noting that the foundation is already covering the expenses for players from low-income families.Â

Roshen’s Chess Academy invites you to a tournament that benefits the Oregon Chess Federation (OCF), Portland Chess Club (PCC), HECSA, and the local businesses at Lloyd Center. 100% of all proceeds (minus operating expenses) go to Oregon Chess Federation, Portland Chess Club & HECSA. Location: Â Â Â Â Â Portland Chess Club, 2025 Lloyd Center, Portland, OR 97232
Eligibility: Â Â Â Â All scholastic players, K-12. However, parents are allowed to play if your kids are playing in the same tournament. We always make sure family members are not paired against each other so that they can gain maximum outside experience.
Format:Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
Top 2 sections (mainly USCF 1000+ players): 3-round (G/45;+5) USCF-Rated (Nationally rated) Chess Swiss Tournament. 2025 OSCF State Championship qualifier. Open to all scholastic chess players.
Other sections: 4-round (G/25;+5 ) USCF-Rated (Nationally rated) Chess Swiss Tournament. 2025 OSCF State Championship qualifier. Open to all scholastic chess players.
Time Control: Â
Top 2 sections (mainly USCF 1000+ players): G/45;+5 (45 minutes per player with 5 seconds added after each move).
Other sections (mainly USCF 1000+ players): G/25;+5 (25 minutes per player with 5 seconds added after each move).
We will provide chess boards, pieces, clocks, pencils & notation sheets for the tournament. But please bring your clock, if you have one. Â
Notation: Â Players are encouraged to notate; players rated over 1000 are required to notate.Â
Prizes:Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Trophies for 1st place, 2nd place, and 3rd place in each section. Medals for all "plus" scorers and "even" scores (see picture below).Â
Entry fee: Â Â Â Â Â Â Â $30 per player. Registration closes on the day before the tournament, December 27th, at 12 PM (Noon) or as soon as we receive 98 registrations (whichever happens first). You can register here for the tournament.

All proceeds from the tournaments (minus operating expenses for trophies, medals, etc) will go to the following nonprofit organizations. You can find more details about our fundraising here.
• Portland Chess Club ( raised $ 8,466 so far)
• Oregon Chess Federation (raised $ 8,546 so far)
Parking & Building Access:Â Parking @ Lloyd center is free. Enter the parking area from 10th Ave & NE Halsey St. and drive all the way to the top floor (3rd floor - rooftop). Park close to the "3JJ" section. Walk through the corner entrance. The chess tournament area is about 10 seconds of walk from the entrance. Very important: The other Lloyd Center entrances won't open until 11 am on Saturdays.
Physical Safety: The playing area will be secured (no non-players will be allowed in the tournament area section) and we will be monitoring the players and their safety while their games are going. However, parents/guardians are responsible for the safety of the kids while they are not playing and when they come out of the playing section (before the tournament, between the rounds, and after the tournament).Â
Health Safety: The playing tables may be placed in accordance with social distancing. We may be doing temperature checks of all players before the tournament. Anybody who has a temperature of 100.4 °F or more won't be allowed to participate and their full tournament registration fees will be refunded. Also, if you are sick (or recovering from illness), please do not come. We will refund the full tournament registration fees.
