As a Master’s candidate at Fordham Gabelli and an active developer in the NYC startup ecosystem, my journey has led me to a singular conclusion: Open Source is the backbone of modern technological progress.

From hackathons in Brooklyn to late-night coding sessions in Manhattan, here is why I, Roshan Sharma, believe open source is the future of software development.

1. Democratizing Developer Tools (The "AtlasPAK" Philosophy)

I believe that powerful technology shouldn't be locked away. When I open-sourced AtlasPAK, my goal was simple: allow teams to run complex tools locally without barriers. Open source isn't just about free code; it's about empowerment. It allows developers—whether they are students at Fordham or CTOs at major corporations—to understand, audit, and improve the tools they rely on every day.

As we race toward an AI-driven future, "black box" algorithms pose a significant risk. My work in Responsible AI and Robotic Process Automation (RPA) has taught me that trust is engineered, not assumed.

In a city as competitive as New York, the open-source community provides a necessary space for mentorship and collective growth.

4. Speed of Innovation for Startups

For founders and builders, speed is everything. Leveraging open-source libraries allows us to prototype rapidly—something I’ve experienced firsthand building projects like NeuroCast AI and CivicLens AI. By standing on the shoulders of giants, we can focus on solving unique problems rather than reinventing the wheel.
