Rose Bauman

Rose frequents a stage as an electro-ambient flutist, jazz/rock saxophonist, experimental mover/dancer/actor, multi-style vocalist, baroque flutist, and punk band front-person and singer. They are invited onto projects that make use of their interdisciplinary skill set and improvisational instinct, and collaborate often with composers who are seeking an unconventional relationship with the flute. 

They studied under Sarah Brady at the Boston Conservatory, before obtaining their masters at California Institute of the Arts under Rachel Rudich and Michael Matsuno, with dedication towards performance art, experimental theater, jazz, early music, composition, and movement, alongside contemporary flute performance. Rose has appeared in masterclasses with mentors such as Mario Caroli, Leone Buyse, Jennifer Grimm, Wilfrido Terrazas, and Virginia Broffit-Kunzer, and won the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's Young Soloist Concerto Competition in 2016.

As a recording artist, their sound has been captured at Fox Studio's Newman Scoring Stage (LA), Evergreen Studios (LA), as well as Berklee College of Music's Shames Studio (Boston), though most of all, they collaborate with independent producers in the community in home studio settings, as well as their own studio: 

foolish fife is their solo noise-ambient project, which features electronically manipulated flute arranged in contrapuntal soundscapes, decorated with abstract lyricism. Žaltys is an electric bass counterpoint post-punk trio exploring grief and ancestral bonds.

As a project composer, Rose offers face-melting medieval noise soundscapes (And So These Girls, 2023), anguished emo punk-rock anthems (Detention of the Damned, 2024), or sometimes a sinister combination of both– currently, Rose works with lyricist Miranda Holliday to co-write the music for Reign of Smoke and Lust, a romance-fantasy satire in styles best described as post-hardcore, emo-rock, and bard-core.

From within the queer-punk DIY scene in Boston, Rose co-founded an independent record label and artist collective, The Pelvic Floor, described as: "an irreverent collective of weirdos of unpredictable like-minded creativity who ... have given rise to a handful of bands that, with their different personalities and idiosyncrasies, have conspired to revolutionize Boston's craziest and freakiest punk scene" [Tremendo Garaje]. Now based in New York City, Rose continues to have an appetite for the nexus of queer, camp, goth, and punk, and remains rooted in the ethos of DIY in spite of unrelenting capitalist ideals of the music industry.

Rose is inspired by mentors Sarah Brady, Dr. Rachel Rudich, Michael Matsuno, Eric Maul, Jonathan Stehney, Pierre Hurel, Debi Fishbein-Adams, Erika Duke-Kirkpatrick, as well as the support of their folks, who are nurses/healers by trade, at home in Baltimore, MD.
