2024 CALIFORNIA INSTITUTE OF THE ARTS MFA InstrumentalArts: Flute

Emma-rose (Rose) Bauman is an expressive and synergistic performer of multiple woodwind instruments: flute, piccolo, alto flute, baroque flute, clarinet, and saxophones. Their classical and contemporary flute training under the pedagogy of Sarah Brady at the Boston Conservatory served as the foundation for their livelihood as an instrumental performer, improviser, and collaborator. After some time as a freelancer in Boston, they were then drawn to the rich experimental community at California Institute of the Arts to pursue their masters degree under the tutelage of Rachel Rudich and Michael Matsuno, with much dedication towards performance art, experimental theater, jazz studies, early music studies, composition, and movement. Emma-rose has appeared in masterclasses with mentors such as Mario Caroli, Leone Buyse, Jennifer Grimm, Wilfrido Terrazas, and Virginia Broffit-Kunzer, and won the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's Young Soloist Concerto Competition in 2016.

As a freelancer, Emma-rose frequents the stage as an electro-ambient flutist, jazz/rock saxophonist, experimental mover/dancer/actor, multi-style vocalist, baroque traversière flutist, and punk band front-person and singer, in addition to their mainstay as a contemporary flutist who regularly premieres works written by their peers. They are invited onto projects that make use of their interdisciplinary skill set and improvisational capabilities, often playing combined instrumental/vocal/company roles in experimental theater and opera works. Their familiarity and love for the stage extends from thousand-seat concert halls to DIY venues, but their home is the theater where all performing art forms converge; with a temperament for the pit orchestra setting, they are a dedicated multi-woodwind doubler and enjoy playing for musicals, operas, and ballets alike.

In addition to their live playing, Emma-rose is a widely recorded musician within their networks, frequently contacted by film score composers and music producers alike. Their sounds have been captured at Fox Studio's Newman Scoring Stage and Evergreen Studios in Los Angeles, as well as Berklee College of Music's Shames Studio in Boston, but they are equally proud to record regularly with the independent producers of their community in home studio settings.

Outside of delighting in the spontaneous life and work of an instrumental freelancer, Emma-rose creates, self-records, self-produces, and performs their solo noise-ambient project, foolish fife, which features their electronically manipulated flute arranged in contrapuntal soundscapes, decorated with abstract lyricism. Additionally, they are known to play in and/or front bands as a vocalist/screamer or electric bassist, their most newest project being Žaltys, a contrapuntal electric bass counterpoint post-punk trio.

Out of the legacy of a DIY experimental queer art venue they lived and worked at while freelancing in Boston, Emma-rose co-founded an independent record label and artist collective, The Pelvic Floor, which is known in the scene as: "an irreverent collective of weirdos of unpredictable like-minded creativity who ... have given rise to a handful of bands that, with their different personalities and idiosyncrasies, have conspired to revolutionize Boston's craziest and freakiest punk scene" [Tremendo Garaje]. Having left Boston for NYC now, Emma-rose continues to have an appetite for the nexus of queer, camp, goth, and punk, and brings the ethos of DIY into every art space they work in.

Emma-rose owes their abilities and inspiration to the efforts and pedagogy of Sarah Brady, Dr. Rachel Rudich, Michael Matsuno, Eric Maul, Jonathan Stehney, Pierre Hurel, Debi Fishbein-Adams, Erika Duke-Kirkpatrick, as well as the support of their folks, who are nurses/healers by trade, at home in Baltimore, MD.

Emma-rose currently lives in Brooklyn, NY with their beloved roommates and their snake, Mynerva.
