Valentine’s Day. A day to celebrate our loved ones by giving them chocolate, roses, and giant stuffed animals. It's interesting though that February 14th wasn't associated with romance when it first became a holiday in the High Middle Ages. It was a day much like St. Patrick's day celebrating the life of a saint. However in the 18th century England, this day evolved into an occasion where lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers and sending Valentine cards.
Since the Renaissance, we’ve been exchanging Valentine’s cards. We all seem to love these handmade gifts of love. Today, children exchange Valentine’s greetings at school. They prepare for the day by making unique boxes to receive their many hearts, cupids, and pun-filled cards.
Chocolates and candy have also become a part of the celebration. While couples tend to be the focus of the day, singles celebrate being single, too. Friends take each other out for dinner and a movie. candlelight and flowers also fit the bill for couples. It’s one of the busiest days of the year for florists.
I personally never understood the institution of Valentine’s day. I never got the point of rushing around on a random day of the year to prepare a gift for someone you love, but overall it is a holiday that reminded us of who loves and cares about us. By bringing your friend a small card you are showing them that you care about them and are there for them whenever they need you. I have used this site to make beautiful valentine’s books for my friends.
This is a photo of my Dad and my soon to be step mom. I just wanted to sneak this in here to say that they are celebrating there first Valentines day together. They will be getting married in May! If you have any advice for them leave it in the comments :)
A few years ago me and my friends went out Ice-Skating for Valentines day. We ere out on the rink for hours falling and slipping, but weirdly having fun. We complained that it cold but after we were done we went to get Ice Cream. How Ironic.
I am realising now that this is the best Valentines day I ever had, and I didn't even have a traditional valentine. This goes to show your valentines don't have to be romantical. Sometimes It is just a group of really good friends hanging out and celebrating the love they show for one another.
