Farm to school is my passion and the focus of my 18 year career thus far. I supported farm to school efforts for the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a Farm to School Regional Lead, built a nationally-renowned farm to school program as the first Farm to School Coordinator at Minneapolis Public Schools, and founded the D.C. Farm to School Network, leading advocacy efforts to pass one of the first local procurement incentive policies in the country.
I am a movement leader with clarity of vision, excellent facilitation skills, a deep rolodex of collaborators in the field, an innovative spirit, and a tireless commitment to those on the ground doing the work.
Outside of work you can find me immersed in community building and mutual aid in Minneapolis, volunteering in my son's cafeteria, hosting dance parties with my daughter, catching a local band with my husband, playing ultimate frisbee, biking everywhere, or making granola.
The rootstock is part of a plant from which new growth (or an entirely new plant) can be produced. Metaphorically, it's a source or a "base" that develop offshoots in new directions.
I believe that schools are the anchors of our communities. Schools can and must be the rootstock from which extends the types of food system transformations we all want to see.
I'm quick to dream. Then, I delight in discovering the "root causes" behind why certain challenges or road blocks are standing in the way. Let's think critically about the roots we need to put down right now that will have the biggest impact, and about how we can sustain our efforts over time in order to see a vision come to fruition.
