Before you hand out the computers and open Minecraft for the first time, we recommend working in collaboration with your students to set out rules and consequences for the productive use of Minecraft in the Classroom.
Identify your class Minecraft experts who could help their peers with the basics.
Discuss how using Minecraft as a tool for learning might be different from how you play at home.
Discuss what learning behaviours look like, and what behaviors aren't good for learning (your Minecraft experts will know what "bad" Minecraft behaviours are, even if you don't).
Discuss what will happen if students don't follow guidelines.
You can use or modify our Canva template if it helps you.
We highly recommend that students are familiar with at least the basic controls before engaging in any ROM Minecraft program. The Minecraft Lesson Library comes with a section of How to Play worlds that we highly recommend you use to gauge how familiar your students actually are with Minecraft.
You will find direct links to these links below, broken down by those we consider Essential, Recommended, and Useful. If you are doing a program that involves coding, we've also included tutorials we recommend for getting started with the Code

Starter Town is our favourite world to use to apply your Minecraft guidelines and practice using Minecraft. It can be used individually, in small groups, or as a whole class. There are blank numbered plots for individual student houses, larger blank plots to practice collaborative building, and includes some pre-existing structures for inspiration and ideas for how blocks work together.
