The exploration of my family story through different types of media.
The mission of this project was to explore the definition of family, what stories we tell, and how has our family shaped ourselves. For my family, we have created this narrative that we are “unlucky”, but from these unlucky situations we still find good.On my maternal side, they call it the “Holland luck” and make all their hardships a humorous story because there is always something good that comes out of the bad. They take unfortunate events with a grain of salt. However, my paternal side of the family isn’t as out in the open with it as my maternal side. I believe they use the “unlucky” description of bad situations to try and understand why they keep happening to them. The hardships on my paternal side can’t really be twisted into a funny story like my maternal side can do. My mother told me that luck is essentially what you make of it. With that in mind, I want to unearth why that is the case and explain why we use the idea of “unluckiness” as a description for the hardships we face. I want to tell the story of what makes my family think we are unlucky, how we deal with it, and how they have created the narrative that we are “unlucky”.
My maternal grandmother was the one who started calling our unlucky narrative the Holland luck. I explored when this started for her and examples of this in her/our lives.
I explore a story from my current life that showed the unluckiness through a picture from my 7th birthday, which doesn't appear to be the case with this photo.
I'm exploring the document that is the draft card for John Rogers, my paternal great great grandpa. While I explore the document, I mention why this is relevant and the background behind his signficance to our unlucky narrative.
My paternal grandpa was in the Vietnam war. The trauma he experienced from this was both mental and physical. I explored the historical significance of his harships and successes during this.
My dad was gifted a tie from a Chancelor who had kicked him out of college his first year. He was then let back into college by the same professor and is now very successful.
