Risk and protective factors in binge drinking. A mathematical modeling approach
[Factores de riesgo y factores protectores en el consumo excesivo de alcohol. Una aproximación desde el modelamiento matemático aplicado]
Rodrigo Gutiérrez (Principal Investigator) & Claudio Rojas-Jara (Co-Investigator)
Binge drinking is a pattern of consumption primarily adopted by adolescents—regardless of gender—episodically and for short periods (two hours) on weekends. In terms of quantity, it equates to the consumption of 60/50 grams of pure alcohol per male/female, who aim to quickly reach intoxication. Socio-medical research reveals concern about excessive alcohol consumption in children and adolescents, given that consumption at an early age increases the likelihood of developing alcohol dependence, along with a series of associated risks such as illness, violence, and injury. In this project, we study the role of family, school, and peers in the incidence of excessive alcohol consumption—social spaces that are frequently valued positively or negatively and, consequently, categorized as risk or protective factors. From a systemic point of view, using the methodology of applied mathematical modeling based on the construction, analysis and interpretation of mathematical models associated with excessive alcohol consumption, we can determine whether in contexts that favor alcohol consumption, such as parties or family gatherings, the prevalence of excessive consumption increases or decreases as the trade-off between risk factors and protective factors intensifies.
Main goal
Analyze the role of family, school and peers in the incidence of excessive alcohol consumption.
Specific goals
To model the infectious-contagious dynamics associated with excessive alcohol consumption based on the interactions between social drinkers and binge drinkers, considering protective and risk factors.
To analyze, both analytically and numerically, the mathematical model formulated for the infectious-contagious dynamics associated with excessive alcohol consumption.
To relate the temporal patterns that emerge from the mathematical model formulated for the infectious-contagious dynamics associated with excessive alcohol consumption to the trade-off between risk and protective factors.
