Application Resources

Most students apply to approximately 15-25 medical schools; we recommend that you do not exceed 40 schools. Though each medical school has its own specific admission requirements, the application timeline is standardized. It is important to be mindful of the deadlines and to apply as early as possible.

What tools are available to help me with the process?

  • The AAMC has an abundance of guides and resources to help you with the application process. AMCAS® is a medical school application processing service that most schools use for their primary applications.

  • Medical School Admission Requirements is a tool from AAMC that allows you to browse, search, and compare information about U.S. and Canadian medical schools. One-year ($28) or two-year subscription ($36).

  • LizzyM Score Application Assistant is a tool from the Student Doctor Network (SDN) that allows you to see how likely you are to be accepted to a medical school based on GPA, MCAT score, and AAMC admissions data.

  • Other pre-med students, medical students, and physicians! Collaborate with others who have just gone through the process. If you don't know anyone and are looking for a mentor, please contact us!

  • If you are in college, consider visiting your career center and/or talking to your pre-health advisor(s).

Additional tips:

  • Create a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet to compare schools in order to determine which programs are the best fit for you and to keep track of all the various requirements and deadlines

  • In addition to average stats, consider factors such as cost, in-state vs. out-of-state, weather, and location

  • Spend lots of time reviewing your personal statement--remember to focus on YOU, not your achievements

  • It is completely okay, if not preferred, to take one or more gap years to strengthen your application
