Gold and Jewels: Unlocking the
Treasure Chest that is Brown Eggs
THIS CLASS IS FULL
Instructor: Shannon Wallis
Email: shannonwallisdesigns@gmail.com
When: Sunday 9:00 - 11:00 a.m.
Cost: $30 Please contact Shannon directly to register and arrange for payment.
What You Need to Bring: Students will need to bring a brown egg divided into basic sixteen (eight vertical sections plus the equator), a pencil, two larger sized kistky (nothing smaller than a fine) and wax.
What's included: Vinegar for etching, a super soft toothbrush and a handout
When you apply wax and dyes to a brown egg, the lines almost appear as gold, and the resulting colors are deeper and more intense than they would be on a white egg. In this class, we will achieve those gold lines and rich jewel tone colors using a 40-triangles division. But we won't stop there. After dying the brown egg in one color, we will learn how to safely etch using vinegar enhanced with setting powder. We will talk about how to use contrast to best effect on any design. Then we will wax some of the white and dye the egg in the same color again to achieve an all-together new, more vibrant color.

What You Need to Bring: Students will need to bring kistky, wax, pencil and egg.

The Trypillian Neolithic culture flourished in central and western Ukraine between 5400 BC and 2700 BC. Its pottery designs (and colors) have been adapted by modern pysanka artists. While these are traditional Ukrainian designs, they are traditional pottery designs. The Trypillian pattern is a typical combination of curves and lines, resembling ancient pottery patterns. The design elements are animals, fish, water, swirls, arrows, tools, and other Pagan symbols. These ancient designs explained in a simplified way that will leave you wondering, “Did I really create that?”
Beginner Drop-Pull
Instructor: Amelia Randich
Email: pysankypower@gmail.com
When: Saturday 9:00 - 11:00 a.m.
Cost: $23 Please contact Amelia directly to register and arrange for payment.
What You Need to Bring: Students will need to bring a pencil, drop-pull tools (a metal pin stuck in the end of a pencil will do; glass-headed pins also work... just make sure they're not plastic!), and additional blown out egg if you want to try more eggs.
What's included: Students will receive and keep: one blown out and divided chicken egg, print materials with directions and pictures of eggs and designs. Students will borrow a wax melter with wax and a candle for class use.
This class will introduce students to the drop-pull technique, which was practiced in western Ukraine, particularly by the Lemko ethnic group. Other European traditions also practice drop-pull, such as the Slovaks and Lithuanians. In this technique, a heated metal stylus is dipped into molten wax and used to create distinctive tear-drop shaped strokes on the egg by depositing the “drop” of wax on the shell and “pulling” it. These strokes can be combined in various ways to create beautiful patterns. Students will have supplies to create one drop-pull pysanka in the batik method but may have time to create another if they bring another shell.
Wax Melting Clinic
Instructor: Bonnie DePrez
Email: lovepysanky@gmail.com
When: Saturday 4:00 - 5:30 p.m.
Cost: $30 Please contact Bonnie directly to register and arrange for payment.
What You Need to Bring: Students will need to bring a kistka and one or two eggs.
What's included: Students will receive wax, mica powder, and crayons. Students will borrow a wax melter for class use.
This class will introduce students to melting wax and adding color and texture using mica powder and crayon for different techniques. Students will be making their own gold wax and learn how to use these waxes to enhance their pysanka or outline a design for dramatic effect.
