During the 1980s I was fortunate to work as a holiday rep and travel courier taking groups of tourists around Europe. Several of these tours included rail journeys. I also visited numerous railways during my free time. Maybe it's because I live very near the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway, but I've always loved narrow-gauge lines!
This book is a look at narrow-gauge railways across Europe that I visited between 1980 and 1990. This was a fascinating time when the last steam trains could still be found in regular (non-tourist) service alongside a wide variety of electric and diesel locomotives which have since been consigned to the scrap heap as lines have either been modernised, closed or re-gauged.Â
All photos were taken by me, and have never been published before. Location maps are included plus details such as construction dates, length and gauge of each railway described. The book can also serve as a travel guide to the various railways.
