Project: Skin Layer Cake
Unit/Project Skills:
Identify and describe structures in the skin, the layers of the skin and the functions of each layer Identify accessory structures, changes during the aging process, and diseases and disorders Compare and contrast treatments for common diseases and injuries
Compare and contrast skin diseases
Purpose/learning targets:
I can demonstrate understanding of the function and structure of the integumentary system. I can determine the relationships between the different parts of the skin and the tissues. I can cite data from medical case studies that distinguish normal from abnormal skin conditions I can differentiate between disorders of the skin, and determine the most appropriate courses of treatment
I can create a unique visual representation of the layers of skin and its accessory structures, present it to classmates, and develop appropriate treatment regiments
Task Description:
1. Design and decorate a cake (which will be provided to you) that represents different layers of skin. It must contain the following:
- Layers of skin (dermis, epidermis, hypodermis, subcutaneous connective tissue) - Structures (hair, nerves, blood and lymphatic vessels, sebaceous and sudoriferous glands)
- 1 skin condition, disease, or injury that can be visually represented and treated with methods discussed in class
- Skin can also contain tattoos, scars, hair, different colorations, markings and jewelry
2. Written Response: Research different treatment options for your chosen disease/injury. You will present your findings and limitations/advantages of each treatment to “care teams.” You will pick the best treatment for your disease and “prescribe” it to your patient (2-3 pages) after discussing with “care teams.”
a. Describe their skin condition - 1 paragraph
b. Present multiple treatment options (pros and cons) - 2 paragraphs
c. Choose and argue the best method of treatment. - 1-2 paragraphs
d. Written response must include scientific and anatomical language, including regional and directional terms (used to describe injury or disease and treatment), 3. You will need to cite 3-5 scholarly sources (these are reliable sources, like Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic, NIH, NCBI, and various medical journals). If you have any questions, send us the link so we can determine its validity and reliability.
4. Annotated bibliography
a. To be submitted beforehand to ensure reliability of sources
5. Group Presentation
a. You will present your final cake and research findings, and the
limitations/advantages of each treatment to “care teams.”
G.R.A.S.P.S Model:
Goal:
· Your task is to construct, design, and decorate a cake (which will be provided to you) that represents different layers of skin. It must contain the following: o Layers of skin (dermis, epidermis, hypodermis, subcutaneous
connective tissue)
o Structures (hair, nerves, blood and lymphatic vessels, sebaceous and sudoriferous glands) Skin conditions, diseases, or injuries that can be visually represented and treated with methods discussed in class
o Skin can also contain tattoos, scars, hair, different colorations, markings and jewelry
o 1 skin condition, disease, or injury that can be visually represented and treated with methods discussed in class
Role:
· Your roles within your groups should be
o Designer
o Researcher
o Recorder (for written response)
o Presenter
Audience:
· Your audience is a group of hospital care teams, to whom you will present your disease and research findings
Situation:
· You are a team of dermatologists building a realistic model of skin to demonstrate the visual aspects of a disease/injury that affects the integumentary system
Product:
· You will create a layer cake that represents the 3 layers of the skin, and contains the above criteria
