This lesson was called "New Worlds." I am particularly proud of this one because I was observed by my district's superintendent, and she was shocked when she learned that I am a first year teacher (it was that or she maybe thought I am too old to be a first year teacher).
Here, students were tasked with the following prompt:
You are scientists in the year 2130, and the earth as we know it is falling apart. Your teams are tasked with finding new worlds to become Earth 2.0, and determining the limiting factors for our populations.
The factors we will be considering are:
Food
Water
Space
Competition
Amount of sunlight
Weather conditions
Each group must determine which of the following worlds are appropriate for each factor, and then we will come together as a community and decide where the rest of the human civilization will live soon. Use evidence to support your claims.
Note the capacity allowed by each factor, and determine whether or not that can hold our given population of 250,000 people.
Once you have determined your new world, write a review of your new chosen world, and describe how all of the limiting factors affect the lives of our population. Use the space below your exit ticket
