Spike Prime and EV3 Robotics Tutorial

Directions for Students:

Read the steps for the task you're working on.
Watch the entire lesson video for that task.
Setup your EV3 program file for this task.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Make sure that you include your initials, task number, and task name in the program name.
Program your EV3 to complete the task. Pause and review the lesson video as needed.
Test your program by downloading it to the EV3 robot and running the program. Each student will create their own individual program for each task but work as a group to test and troubleshoot your teammate's programs.
When EVERYONE on your team has successfully tested their program, as a team demonstrate each of your programs to your coach.
If your coach approves your program, you can move onto the next task.

IMPORTANT NOTE: These video tutorials show one way to perform each task. However when programming your EV3 robots there will always be many different ways to approach the programming. Some ways may be more efficient than what is shown in these tutorials. After you master the basics of programming the EV3, you'll be able to get creative with your programming and to look for better methods for completing the tasks.

Task 1-Display

1. Display “Crazy 1” (under “Display”)
2. Wait 2 seconds
3. Play Sound “Red” (under “Sounds”)
4. Change Status Light to “Red” (under “Displays”)
5. Wait 2 seconds (under "Control")
6. Play Sound “Green” (under “Sound”)
7. Change Status Light to “Green” (under “Display”)
8. Wait 2 seconds (under "Control")
9. Play Sound “Good Bye” (under “Sounds”)
10. Change Display to “Sleeping” (under “Display”)
11. Wait 2 seconds

Task 2-Move

1. Use the the “Move” brick to move forward for 1 rotation
2. Use the the “Move” brick to curve right:10 for 2 rotations
3. Use the the “Move” brick to curve left:10 for 2 rotations
4. Use the the “Move” brick to move forward for 1 rotation
5. Use the the “Move” brick to curve right:100 for 1 rotation at 100% power
6. Wait 1 second
7. Use the the “Move” brick to curve left:100 for 1 rotation at 100% power
8. Wait 2 seconds
9. Continue programming your robot to drive it back to base

Task 3-Move 2

1. Use the the “Move” brick to move forward until you reach the other end of the board. You'll need to figure out the number of rotations.
2. Use the the “Move” brick to do a 90 degree turn to the left.
3. Use the the “Move” brick to move to move forward to the far corner of the board.
4. Wait 2 seconds
5. Program your EV3 to return to your starting point by following the same path that you came.

Task 4-Loop

1. Drive in a square using only 2 steering blocks and a loop
2. Should stop after 4 loops in same location you started

Task 5-Figure 8

1. Use steering blocks and a loop to drive in a figure 8 around two cups (50cm meter apart)
2. Should stop in the same location you started

Note to Coaches: This task is specifically designed to be challenging so expect kids that are new to the EV3 to struggle with this one. This is a good opportunity to teach the kids some problem solving and troubleshooting skills which will be essential when working with the EV3. Teach them to build their programs in small parts (just 1 or 2 blocks at a time), then test those parts before continuing to build more of the program. Also if they're trying to troubleshoot a large program, teach them how to break that large program into smaller chunks in order to find and focus on the problem.

Task 6-Ultrasonic Sensor

1. Drive forward
2. When the ultrasonic sensor sees the object at Less than 10cm the EV3 should stop
3. Wait 1 second
4. Play sound “Kung fu” (under “Expressions”)
5. Use the the “Move” brick to curve left:100 for 1 rotation at 100% power

Task 7-Drive Forever

1. Use a forever-until brick to program the EV3 to drive forward forever until it sees an object less than 20cm away
2. Stop and wait 1 second
3. Back up and turn a little before continuing in the "Forever" loop

Task 8-Grab Block

1. Drive forward
2. Stop and play sound “Detected” when ultrasonic sensor sees the block
3. Use Medium Motor to grab the block
4. Drive backwards for 3 seconds
5. Use the Medium Motor to release the block

Task 9-Detect Black Line

1. Drive forward
2. Stop when color sensor sees a black line and play sound “Black” (under “colors”)
3. Drive backwards for 1 rotations

Task 10-Black Box Forever

1. Use a loop brick to program the EV3 to drive forward forever. It should stop, back up, and turn whenever the color sensor sees black. The EV3 should be able to stay inside and keep moving in the black box forever.

Task 11-Color and Ultrasonic

1. Use the color sensor to drive the EV3 forward forever inside a black box.
2. Use the ultrasonic sensor to detect and avoid objects.

Task 12-Color Brick

Run all these commands in separate loops

1. When the color sensor sees green, say “Green” and move forward for 1 rotation
2. When the color sensor sees red, “say “Red” and move backwards for 1 rotation
3. When the color sensor sees blue, say “Blue” and turn right for 1 rotation
4. When the color sensor sees yellow, say “Yellow” and turn left for 1 rotation

Task 13-Follow Black Line

1. Use the color sensor to program the EV3 to follow a black line.

TIP: If you’re having trouble staying on the line, lower your motor speed

Task 14-Follow Colored Lines

1. Use the color sensor to program the EV3 to follow a black line.
2. Switch to following a yellow line
3. Switch to following a red line
4. Turn around when the color sensor sees green
  - TIP: This will require 3 move blocks to find the link again.
    - a 90 degree turn to the right
    - a short move forward
    - another 90 degree turn to the right
5. Follow the yellow, red, and black colored lines back
6. It should be able to follow this colored path forever

Task 15-Touch Sensor

1. Program the EV3 to drive forward until the touch sensor hits the wall.
2. When the touch sensor hits the wall, the EV3 should stop,wait 1 second, say “hello” (under “communication), and then quickly hit the wall with it’s arm 3 times.

Task 16-Gyro Sensor

1. Move forward for 1 second
2. Use the Gyros-sensor to make a 90 degree turn (as close as possible)
3. TIP: Use the display status to show degree turned
4. Move forward for 1 second

Task 17-Maze

1. Move forward indefinitely in a loop
2. If the color sensor sees blue, turn 90 degrees to the left
3. If the color sensor sees red, turn 90 degrees to the right
4. If the color sensor sees yellow, do a happy dance to celebrate
5. Stop and exit the program.
