First and second grade students will enjoy using LEGO® WeDo USB hubs, motors and software to build and program a variety of projects. They will master using different LEGO® parts to build robots like the rocket ship, bunny, and soccer kicker. In this process they will learn basic engineering and simple machine principles, such as friction and leverage. They will learn to think like programmers using LEGO® WeDo’s intuitive picture-based coding software. Students will program their projects’ motors to move in a variety of directions and tempos, make sound effects and music, and pull up different backgrounds for their computer screens. They will combine their creativity with mechanical expertise as they build from blueprints then expand onward to customize their creations. Along the way, students are given team-based tournaments that help them develop their social partnering skills. By the end of class they will have developed friendships, leadership, and a sense of confidence in their building and programming skills.
