Student Impression: “Threads of Hope”
Drawing by Bella Xiao, 4th Grade, Manor Elementary School
During a classroom visit, I shared with the students how, as a young boy, I could only see the messy, tangled “back side” of my family’s story — the pain of war, displacement, labor camps, and separation. All I saw were ugly, dangling threads.
Bella Xiao captured this idea beautifully. In her drawing, a young boy (representing me) holds up what looks like a chaotic tapestry, while a heart floats above — a reminder that from the other side, those same messy threads create something meaningful and full of hope.
This drawing perfectly illustrates the central message of Threads of Hope: even when life shows us only the tangled, difficult side, there is often a larger, beautiful picture being woven — one of resilience, kindness, and love that connects us across generations.
Thank you, Bella, for seeing the heart of the story so clearly.
