Growth and division of Staphylococcus aureus - Here, we have S. aureus (aka MRSA) growing and dividing under the microscope. This process is essential for the bacteria to be able to cause an infection - by studying it we hope to ultimately come up with better ways of killing bacteria (as well as improving our fundamental understanding of nature!). The bacteria have been genetically modified to make them glow.
Swimming Escherichia coli - This video is of E. coli (another important pathogen) swimming about under the microscope. I was working on this as a live demo to show to the public at events such as KrebsFest. I used a dye that goes into the bacterial cell membrane to make these glow under the microscope.
