I worked for 4J Studios as an Intern Level Builder on two shipped products, detailed below. This role has allowed me to have experience working within the games industry and as part of a large team. I would see a project going from the initial concept to a feature-complete, shipped product. Further details of the project will be available once it has been shipped.
This was the first project I worked on for 4J Studios. My role as a level builder was to recreate, using in-house tools, scenes from the Ice Age movie in a Minecraft map. This was used to showcase the content pack and to give players a world to explore. I began working for the team during the first few weeks of the project and worked through its entire cycle. I received feedback regularly and worked in a small team communicating ideas and concepts for some puzzles within the level as well. This was my first professional project I completed as a practitioner whilst studying for my Masters in Game Development.
After finishing the Ice age pack, Minecraft released their "Caves and Cliffts" update. 4J have a plethora of texture packs now in game so when new blocks or mobs are added, they have to go back and make sure the old texture packs have textures for these new blocks and mobs. I was involved in updating these textures in the style of old packs 4J had done. This was my first time attempting pixel art and although it had a learning curve, I was able to produce art that was used in an array of texture packs. The experience showed me I was capible of learning new skills within industry that previously I was not confident about.
