Benefits of

School Counseling

School counselors must obtain a master's degree in counseling and a state-issued license/certification for school positions in South Carolina because they are an essential element of the educational ecosystem. School counseling programs not only have a positive impact on students but also several groups of people in education.

Student Support

The greatest benefit of your school counselors is that we prepare all students for academic, college/career and social-emotional challenges by connecting educational agendas to their future success. We strive to engage students as motivated learners and facilitate their exploration of careers. We also encourage students to talk to their parents/guardians about things they're concerned about. When students do not feel comfortable talking about emotional or social challenges at home, we may offer individual counseling sessions or refer students for outside counseling. As the need arises, we offer group support sessions for our students based on current needs.

Parent/Caregiver Support

The support that school counselors provide for parents/caregivers is as  equally important as the support that we give our students. We may facilitate individual, parent-teacher or parent-parent consultations and discussions to ensure that everyone is on the same page when it comes to student challenges, whether it involves disciplinary decisions, specific educational material or social-emotional problems. At times, we may provide education to parents and serve as a resource when questions arise about child-related problems. We also ensure that our families understand various services that other staff such as nurses, psychologists, resource teachers and social workers can provide for students who have special needs or abilities. When families need extra support, we help them find it, whether it is within the school system or the community.

Support for Teachers/Staff

School counselors provide support to teachers as a team member who can effectively address the educational goals and needs of students, leading to increased student achievement. In addition to delivering lessons for students, we can help teachers plan classroom and group activities that meet individual students' needs. We may gather and share resources with our teachers to help develop their classroom management skills and teaching effectiveness. At times, we may observe students in the classroom or other areas and use the data to offer suggestions for student success.

Support for Administrators

School administrators are responsible for running all school operations, from educational materials to everyday school activities. School counselors are an integral part of these responsibilities. We ensure that the school counseling program and academic mission are aligned and promote student success. We develop a system for program management, as well as help our administration use counselors effectively. By evaluating the school counseling program, we monitor data in order to make revisions and streamline program goals for the success of our school. Additionally, we may provide useful program data for funding and grant application purposes.
