This document is a compilation of multiple AP writing pieces. This includes an example press release, blog post, media strategy with tactics, and social media post. They each revolve around the story of "Little Red Riding Hood" per the course directions. My goal for this assignment was to take a position or identify an issue conveyed within the original fairytale and create original content based off of that perspective. I created the positioning from a mental health point of view, acting as the Wood Mental Health Center. They are pushing for new mental health initiatives following the tragic events of Little Red and her grandmother.
In this assignment, I learned the basics of AP writing and how to structure journalistic and/or PR stories. I also learned how to prioritize the relevant information (ex: Pyramid style), how to edit documents professionally, and how to draft a PR media strategy/campaign. It was very insightful and helpful as an aspiring journalist that loves to write.
This document is a feature article piece about one of my favorite former professors at IU Indianapolis, Trevor Potts. I interviewed Potts about his career, motivations, commitments, favorite experiences, and more. I wanted to showcase Potts in a brief article without it becoming a biography. It includes key takeaways from our conversation as well as direct quotes from the subject.
This piece helped me learn how to effectively transition interview notes into a cohesive story that highlights the subject. I was able to take our notes and directly create something that shares those findings. I also learned how to write a feature that effectively showcases the topic to the audience throughout this assignment.
This link to the left takes you to my high school portfolio associated with PHS Media News, my high school's media program. I was our Chief Design Editor my senior year and had been on the staff as a writer, editor, and designer since the seventh grade. I spent the majority of my time in Heather Nichols' classroom either taking photos, creating short videos, or trying to think of the next coverage idea.
My media experience in high school is my reason for studying communication studies and public relations today. It was here that I discovered my love for things like InDesign and Times New Roman for the first time. I loved to manage the newspaper and I loved to create content for our social media page, whether it be infographics or short videos.
Over my high school career, I learned how to write for different target audiences, identify sources and interview effectively, edit and correct stories, manage a school website, and much more. I will forever be thankful for the solid journalism foundation I had when coming to college years ago! Click the link to the left to explore my past works.
