EDUCATION
BS-MS (Bachelor of Science-Master of Science)
Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Mohali
BS-MS dual degree program aims to integrate the conventional bachelor's and master's programs into a more holistic science education experience, bringing together the biological, chemical, mathematical, physical, and earth sciences. I majored in Biology and minored in Science and Society Studies.
PUBLICATIONS
Liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) is a process that often occurs due to binding between oppositely charged biopolymers, and has gained increasing attention recently due to their ubiquity in biological systems and ability to direct essential cellular processes.
RESEARCH EXPERIENCE
BLUE MARBLE SPACE INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE (BMSIS)| Research Associate
Literature review comparing the similarities and differences of primitive (prebiotic) and modern (biological) phase separation systems in hopes of discovering more about the potential evolution from primitive membrane-less compartments to modern membrane-less organelles and preparing the review paper, which is published in the journal Peptide Science.
RETINAL REGENERATION IN ZEBRAFISH| Master's thesis student
To understand the molecular mechanisms underlying retina regeneration using the zebrafish model. Knocking out genes such as rnf2 and tuba using CRISPR Cas9 and comparing the expression of these mutant fishes with control (non-mutated fishes).
MAX PLANCK INSTITUTE FOR HEART AND LUNG RESEARCH | Master's thesis student
Relevance of Transcriptional Adaptation in human health and disease. I worked on the therapeutic significance of Transcriptional Adaptation in conditions such as Thalassemia and Sickle cell anemia; a transgenic approach was used to target the Human Hemoglobin gene. Apart from the HBB gene, I also worked on the Pannexin 1 gene to observe the phenomena of Transcriptional Adaptation in the Pannexin gene family in HEK cells. CRISPRCas9 was used to knockout Pannexin 1 gene (56.7 Kb).
INTERNATIONAL GENETICALLY ENGINEERED MACHINE (iGEM) | Experimental team leader
I, along with my team, prepared a diagnostic kit for the early detection of oral squamous cell carcinoma through salivary biomarkers. In this project, a prototype for detecting OSCC (Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma) in an Indian cohort by detecting the presence of abnormally regulated protein bio- markers in the suspect's saliva.
MAX PLANCK INSTITUTE FOR HEART AND LUNG RESEARCH Summer Intern (Vitually)
Identifying possible new models for Transcriptional adaptation/genetic compensation in humans and mice. After completion, the work was presented in front of the lab.
PROTEIN ENGINEERING AND STRUCTURAL BIOCHEMISTRY (IISERM)| Intern
Analyzing phase separation behavior of HU DNA ligases. Extraction and Purification of proteins from Thermus thermophilus bacterial species and trying to study their phase separation behavior.
SYNTHETIC ORGANIC CHEMISTRY (IISERM)| Summer Intern
I worked on moisture-sensitive and organic-catalyzed reactions. I utilized continuous flow technology i.e. used a micro-reactor to carry out certain reactions. I incorporated the use of several chromatography techniques.
