I had the honor of hosting the late Dr Mangala Narlikar back in Singularity 2021. She was an eminent Indian mathematician who broke all the glass ceilings and not only contributed to academia but to society at large too. It was truly inspiring to hear her views on cultivating science in society. Her compassion towards underprivileged children and efforts to teach them maths in a fun way is truly heart touching.
IEEE student's branch
I was the co-founding chair of IEEE's student branch at IISER-Bhopal in 2022. Since the Engineering Department was roughly new, it was a challenging task to establish a base, but the support was overwhelming and we did it ! The student branch has been an active front at the institute for a while and has spearheaded a symposium on Engineer's day, helped conduct hackathon and share updates on recent trends in technologies be it in the field of Artificial Intelligence, Biomedicine or even Physics. We have also organized guest talks with eminent professors in the field of Quantum Computation, VLSI design etc. If you are interested in our activities, let me know, we can have a chat anytime!
A few snips from the various quizzing and science outreach events.
As the first female vice secretary of the Science Council of my institute and subsequently the advisor of the next tenure, I was fortunate to have gotten the opportunity to take part in multiple outreach activities for both college and school students alike! I favourite event was Renaissance physics, where our team had prepared preoblems related to applying physics in real life that would require a set of tools, hands-on yet constrained enough to tickle the brain. A similar challenge was held for school students as well accompanied by quizzes and fun games!
As a member of the Physics club, I delivered a talk to students from senior years and PhDs on a Primer to 'CERN: The fundamentals of particle accelerator technology '. This talk covered very basic aspects of High energy physics and walked through the particle classification hierarchy. As a member of the club, I also actively made weekly posts on automata theory and fractals suing tkinter in python.
As a part of the SDC in my Sophomore year, I headed the orientations cell where I counducted various sessions aimed at addressing how to write cold mails, approach researchers for internship and participate in hackathons and also contributed to placement activities with the Placement Cell.
As a part of the 'Sci-talk' series, I hosted Mr Steven Roy Swanson, NASA astronaut at IISER-B remotely. Swanson has flown two shuttle flights, STS-117 and STS-119, and one Soyuz flight, TMA-12M. All of the flights were to the International Space Station. He shared his experiences aboard the ISS and the research experiments he was a part of. Truly this was a stellar session!
I love hosting and anchoring events. It makes me ebullient to meet people from different walks of life and learn about their struggles and their ambitions. I was chosen by APS officer Mr Mukul Saikia to host the raising day of the 2nd Battalion of the Assam Forest Protection Force. It was very inspiring and overwhelming to see the efforts and sacrifices of the police force in keeping residents safe and sound. Many soldiers were also martyred in this process and I was saddened yet touched by how strong their families are in supporting their endeavours, truly where would we be without them!
On the occasion of International Day for Women and Girls in Science, I hosted a Panel discussion inviting eminent female and male scientists to share the experiences and struggles they have gone through and how they broke the glass ceiling. The panel was appreciated owing to a representation of male scientists too, who opined their views on the importance of gender sensitization.
